Sad day for my fishies :(

Today has been a horrible fish day for me. I woke up this morning to find one of my male peacocks dead and two of my baby brichardi cichlids missing. I went to net my peacock out of the tank and one of the baby brichardis was stuck in his mouth. My guess is that during the night he ate one and choked while trying to eat the other one. I was really suprised because peacocks are supposed to be pretty peaceful. (By the way, I know you shouldn't keep brichardi with peacocks, but I was getting ready to take them back to the LFS). I then checked my discus tank, and one of the two discus that had been doing badly had died. I thought that was enough bad luck for one day, but later today, I noticed my pair of GBR's breathing very rapidly even though the rest of the fish in the tank were fine. Tonight I found my female GBR dead. I know that rams do best in soft water, and I have had a hard time keeping rams in my tanks in the past. I have water with a pH of 7.8 that I have softened with driftwood to 7.2, but maybe this is still to high for them. If my male doesn't make it, I don't think I will try keeping them again. I enjoy them so much, but until I can get a RO water unit for my sink, I don't want to keep killing them. I am so sad tonight as I have never lost so many fish at once.

OHHH Kate.... I am so sorry.. you must be sick with heartbreak. That many loses sure can get us discouraged real fast. You have Discus and GBR's two species that are very sensitive to water conditions. I know your water quality was fine.. just that sometimes that isnt even enough. I know how hard it is to loose a favorite fish and I have lost plenty. just lost my female GBR too about two days ago.. for no reason at all. ANd... I have a low ph of 6.4 for them, so sometimes its not the PH that affects them. Your Discus was stressed and not doing well when you bought it, so it just didnt have the strength to survive. I hope your other Discus are doing well. I would just go ahead and do a water change anyway.. sometimes that helps.
Im sending 's your way... and hope that you feel better.

Thanks so much everyone. I was am feeling a bit better today. I just felt awful that so many of my fish passed away in one day. I know that I didn't do anything wrong and that my water quality was fine, but I still can't help but wonder if there was something I could have done. I felt so bad today when I saw my male GBR gasping for air at the surface. I know he will probably pass within the next day or so and he looked so lonely without his girlfriend in there with him. It just sucks that we get so attached to these little guys. I know that it is perfectly natural to lose fish periodically, but it still feels bad when it happens. Thanks so much for all of you love and support. I feel so fortunate to have friends like you guys that understand! I am sending hugs back to all of you!

Im so sorry about the loss of your fish! I don't know how I would react to that! I guess what my husband keeps telling me about fishkeeping helps me when I do loose a fish is no matter how efficent of a fishkeeper you are you still will have sick fish, you will still have fish die... just don't let it discourage you from having fish and enjoying them.

A r/o unit would make a great investment, if I kept anything besides what I have I would have to have one as well.. our water is hard water w/ a high ph.

Its hard to loose that many pets in one day!

Kate, I found this post just as I was to post my similar story. I am so sorry for your many losses and I understand how crappy and sad it makes you feel.

I hope you are soon able to get new fish and put this all behind you!!
