Holy Cow....

Okay so I was here on fishlore looking at dragon bettas and the phone rang. So I got up and while I was finding the phone to answered it I rememebered that I needed to put supper in the oven. So I answere the phone (telemarketer, I hate them) and walk out, heading to the kitchen to put the quiche in the oven and I feel something move under my foot. After probably scaring the telemarketer to death from screaming in the phone I looked down and saw there was a mouse (we live in a house built in the civil war on a big farm, so mice are a pretty common thing, they are like pond snails you can only hope to control them if you dont want to tear your house down) where my foot had been. I said 'no thanks' to the telemarketer, put dinner in the oven and go back to see the mouse still there. I say to myself 'thats strange' and attempt to catch him. It took me like 2 minutes to catch him, I think he was phased that I allmost steped on him, and now he is in a plastic container looking at me while I write. I think that I hurt him. He is just kinda sitting there panting and I feel really bad. What do I do? I dont want to let him go if I hurt him, and my mom will freak if she sees him so what now?

Since hes wild, hes more then likely really really scared. That could be why he is panting hard. If he is hurt, not much you can do I guess. You could take him to a vet, but a mouse is so small I think that if he is hurt all the vet could do would be to put him down. If I were you I would let him go. Put him in a place free of snakes and covered so hawks and other birds can't see him. Last year in the spring we had a big mouse problem, they were everywhere. When we found one in the house we let it go outside. Once my cat got one and broke its leg(i think, it was at a weird angle) we put it outside in a safe area and he was gone an hour later, I guess he felt good enough to run away because their was no way a prediter could get to it.

Yeah I live on a farm. And I love mice. But I couldnt kill him I would cry I am very sensitive to the lose of life. Like I cant kill house flies kind of sensitivity. I just dont see how God has granted this otherwise dead object life, it drives me crazy when people end life and they dont even realize how special it is.

I ended up going out to the alfalfa field and letting him go. He just sat there, but when I came back 30 minuets later he was gone.

Glad you were able to catch and release him. I have a soft spot for mice, I used to have one as a pet...but I still wouldn't want one running loose through my home!!

I would have let it go too.

If a trap or the cat doesn't properly take care of them, I catch them and let them go outside.

The cat in my avatar was a great mouser (a year later, I still miss the little guy) but I couldn't stand to watch him 'play' with them. I'd capture it and let it outside. It really confused the cat. LOL

Over the winter, we caught one in a trap by it's little foot it squeaked and squeaked. My husband put gloves and and released it outside.
The next day we saw another (same one?) mouse.
The big joke at our house was it couldn't be the same one because it didn't have a tiny cast with itty bitty crutches.
