Hi all

So I am a chemistry major and at my school all chem majors do a senior research project that involves something of interest to them. I think it would be cool to research something about aquariums, but I'm not really sure what I could do.

Preferably this would be some 'problem' in the aquarium hobby that I could explore, but it could also just be researching how some phenomenon works.

I think something to do with the Nitrogen cycle is the most obvious thing, but my research has to be 'new' and I feel like nitrification is relatively well understood, although maybe I could look into some of the enzymes that nitrifying bacteria have?

So shoot me some ideas, and remember, they have to be chemistry-related (or biochemical, but not biological, so I probably couldn't actually use fish directly in my research).

Hmmm.. maybe something with the way that activated carbon deals with chemicals, both in capturing and releasing them?

My husband was a Enviromental Science/wildlife management major w/ chem minor... he has a (this sounds geeky) cool liminology book... have you researched anything in one of those books for ideas? Since the aquarium hobby I have actually (since he dug the book out for me) read quite a bit in the book...
I will post again tomm.. I will ask him if he has any ideas since he has the degree in this stuff... he did a big internship w/ the Y-12 plant at Oak Ridge, TN and did something w/ aquariums at another place w/ biologist after shocking fish in the river system in Oak Ridge... (lets just say we aren't touching any water in or around that place after what he found during his time there no matter what they say radiation wise, and mercury wise) When I can get him to talk about the stuff he has studied and learned its very interesting...
