Confessions of a Fishaholic (how I became afflicted with MTS)

My name is Will, and I am a fishaholic. Here is my story.

I had a small tank as a kid. I didn't know what I was doing, didn't bother to do any reading on the subject, all of my fish died, I threw my hands up in disgust and gave up.

Now that I'm a bit more knowledgable, I know that my past failures might have had something to do with the monthly cleaning during which I would net all of the fish, tear everything down, and give everything a thourough scrubbing so that it was nice and shiny clean

Years later, I am married and my wife and I have a baby girl. One day, we noticed an aquarium shop not far from our house. We decided to stop in and have a look around. We ended up leaving with a complete setup for a 30g tank. I set it up in the baby's room, as we intended it to be little more than an ornate night light.

A few weeks later, it became apparent that there was a problem. Although the tank was doing wonderfully, it did have a major problem--it was located in the baby's room. Daddy was spending more time in the baby's room than the baby. It got to the point at which I was pressuring my wife to keep the baby awake longer so that I could spend more time in her room looking at the fish.

I knew at this point that I needed another tank (not wanted, needed), but I just couldn't justify (make my wife understand the necessity of) the expense of a new tank.

Fortunately, if there will be water if God will's it, then there will also be fish tanks. One of my co-workers mentioned in passing that his Python had outgrown the tank in which he was living, and that he was looking to get rid of the tank. I jumped on it (buy first, get permission later). It was quite a deal, a 75g with stand, cover, and lighting for 50 bucks. Talk about providence.

It soon became apparent, however, that there was another problem. I was spending so much time in the living room looking at fish, that I wasn't getting enough sleep. That's how the 10g ended up in our bedroom.

Then a new problem reared it's ugly head. Like most people, I spend more of my awake time at work than I do at home. Unfortunately, all of my tanks were at home and not at work. To resolve this, I got a great deal on a 5gallon mini-bow corner tank that fits nicely on my desk at work. What the wife doesn't know about won't hurt her. She never comes to my office anyway.

Finally, the 40g and 23g were acquired as part of the deal that saw the 75g get supplanted by a piano. I gave up a bit on volume, but maintained a presence in the living room and gained a presence in the home office.

Although my wife did put up some resistance initially (why do we need another tank when we've already got one?), I believe that she has come to understand the power that MTS can have over a person, and that resistance is futile. She still has not backed off her stance of no tanks in the kitchen or bathroom, however. I'm still working on that.

Well, that's my story, thanks for taking the time to read. I'd like now to leave the forum open for others to share their stories of the descent down the slippery slope that is MTS.

My mts works out great in my house w/ me being the master of the kitchen at least.. I have a 10g setting on one of my cabinets... I am wanting a small tank for my bedroom.. when I get the kids suffled out I will be getting one for my nightstand... I am also getting my 6 year old a tank for his room too... spread the tank wealth!
Can you come up w/ reasons to keep the 75 and stock it?

I can think of plenty of reasons to keep it. If it weren't for the fact that there is absolutely no room left in my little house, I would find a way to do it. The only place it could possibly go at this point is upstairs, but the prospect of lugging buckets up and down the stairs for water changes is more than a bit daunting (there's no plumbing up there). I'm also a bit concerned with the weight factor. It's a story and a half bungalow that was built in the early 50s. I'm not too confident about 800+ pounds of fish tank sitting on a second floor that was only intended to be a storage area.

One of these years, we will move into a house with a basement. I have a feeling my MTS will be back with a vengeance at that point. Subterranean fishroom, anyone?

upstairs could be problematic for a 75g tank... especially w/ the age of the house... I can see your point.. Do you have a python for your water changes? they really take the lugging the buckets out of water changes... and you can buy extension hoses for them to make them longer...

I LOVE it!.........Thank you for sharing your MTS....

I for one see NOTHING wrong with fish tanks in the kitchen! Much easier to do the water changes.

Maybe if you would do dishes, she would see the benefit of your having just one in there.

For me 4 of my tanks are in the kitchen. On the counter over the dishwasher I have 2 10 gallon tanks. Not pretty, but where they sit, no one really sees it, and it is functional, they are near the sink, and a plug in....

Right to the left IN the wall between the kitchen and living room is my first 55 gallon tank, and on the island in front of the dishwasher/sink is the other 55 gallon. I don't need all that counter space any longer, so what better thing than to take it up with tanks!

My 5 gallon moved to the kitchen. I love watching them while I am getting dinner ready and water changes are a breeze!

Absolutely. I'm not sure how well it would work running from downstairs to upstairs, however. I might have to look into making an extension, though. Even doing changes on the 23 (home office is upstairs) gets to be strenuous (although I usually just open the window and dump the wastewater onto the lawn below). The only real snag is my concern of that much weight on an upstairs floor in which there is no real access to any outside walls...

My wife really loves our Betta (the one she knows about, the 5g tank is at work). Maybe I can convince her that a 5g minibow Betta tank would be a nice addition to the kitchen...he could be her fish (I'll even let her pick him out).

Yea that 75g will take the edge off for about a month... long enough to get it set up... lol thats about how long it does for me when I get a new one... then I want another.. I am really suffering now! I really want a new big tank!

Sure get the wife into it! Let her pick the fish out... he he he.. thats how I got my last tank.. I let my husband pick some fish out and he fell in love w/ the peacock cichlids.. they don't mix w/ the mbunas... hence new tank! Now I whine about the 55g not being enough for my mbunas... its starting to get to him... he mentioned putting extra support under the house for a 90g tank... (we have a doublewide).. so if he does that... I get a new tank! I will turn my 55 into the peacock tank.. and take the peacock tank and turn it into maybe a saltwater?? or amazon.. amazon would be hard here our city water is very hard water...

hehehe! Getting the spouse involved is a great idea! That is how I got my new 80 gallon tank. Of course the fish that my husband likes the most are all of the tough big fish such as Oscars, Green Terrors, and Jack Dempsies. I persuaded him to let me get this new tank by telling him that he could pick the fish (of course I had the final say because he knows nothing about stocking). You should see him now......he is so attached to our Oscar that when he got sick my husband was absolutely freeking out! Lol! I was like "It's just ich.....jeeeeeze.........calm down".

lol.. my husband is a enviromental science/wildlife managment major so if he really wanted to he could tell me to shut up about the water and teach me a thing or two about the alge, nitrogen cycle, etc...

one thing is for sure though he don't know anything about tank care.. he will pick pretty fish out so to speak.. but nothing at all about vaccuming the tanks.. feeding the fish (their rigid diet I have the mbuna on)... he killed one of my fav fish by feeding them as if the fish flake container was a salt shaker when I was at work..
He sits and looks at them, enjoys them.... and occasionally will offer to help put the rocks back in when I vaccum the mbuna tank... (of coarse I have to redo it he won't put them in stable and those fish dig! so they will knock them over in a heart beat)...

I mentioned doing a south american tank and he raised cain... then I looked at him and said who does the tank care... then he shut up real fast... then I started thinking.. well I could actually get by w/ salt water since I can have any fish I want w/ me doing the care for them.... the rest of the family just gets to enjoy the fish

When we finally get to build a house I am going to have a den built w/ a concrete bottom floor w/ hard wood over it so that I can have a 200g tank.. I want some oscars.. that will be my husbands fish... he wanted oscars from the get go.. they are beautiful fish! not to mention I love them too!
