Snail Problems!

Hi!

So, I have a bit of a problem. My twenty gallon tank is so full of snails, that i think there are more inches worth of snails than fish. Besides netting all them out, what else can i do besides that? I will also be getting "snail-B-gone", but it only rids of the eggs, not the actual snails.

Let me tell you what a pain those things are.... I actually cleaned a tank that was infested w/ them out... threw the substrate away! I wanted to make the tank a gbr tank, well I put black sand in the bottom, plants, etc... well I have malawi cichlids... and well I found a baby peacock I couldn't live w/o.. needless to say the day I was going to buy my gbr pair and they were out I got the baby peacock...
2 months after the tank was scrubed down, and the plants are from snail free tanks of my mothers so is the decor brand new.... I had 2 snails!!!!
I don't know where they came from?? I scrubbed everything!
My policy.. see a snail... squash a snail.... thats my only way of getting the numbers down.... I squashed the 2 I found and haven't seen any of the nasty buggers again...I also think too that my peacock where its getting larger is eating them.. ? they say they eat crustatns (sp) in the wild...

I am guessing they do? I saw it chewing on a snail one day, and the snail pop is staying way down w/ it in the tank... not to mention they do like to eat crustatons...

It's an ongoing battle. You can leave lettuce leaves in the tank weighed down and draw some to it or use a turkey baster and/or tank tongs to pull them out as you see them. You can even try using something like coppersafe, but need to be sure the fish would all be ok with it or move them to another tank until you've treated the tank & cleared it out with carbon.

A snail explosion usually denotes that you may be feeding your fish a little too much. Your snail population will grow in ratio with how much there is in the tank for them to eat. Before you try chemicals, try cutting the fish food down( a fishes stomach is the size of one eye), do a very thorough substrate cleaning, do a couple of large water changes. Pick out/bait the snails you see.
see how this works.snail chemicals sometimes cause more problems than they cure. They cause the snails to die which can cause ammonia to rise. let us know how things are going

The snails in my tank eat my plants, thats where i see them more than i see them on the substrate. I only feed once a day slowly so the fish can consume them. I have been picking them out when ever i see them but there always more.

Sabi: Do you have a tank where you could put a freshwater puffer in it that has the snails? and you could move the other fish out? The freshwater puffer would eat your snails for you....
