My Electricity bill for this month, (the first full month with my tank), was realy high. I wouldnt think that a fish tank would draw too much power. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Heaters and lights are what draw a lot of power...my 125 gallon tank has 884 watts between the heaters and lights. To compair that is like having 14 lamps going in your house with 60 watt light bulbs! SO, if you can turn out lights except JUST when you want to enjoy your tank it would be good. If it is a planted tank, you should only have to run lights 12 hours a day. To keep algae down it is best to only have them on 10 hours a day any way.

The filters don't take hardly any wattage....My Eheim 2028 canister is only about 30 watts! Air pumps also don't take but about 15 watts, so those are very effecient.

IF you keep your home warm, around 70, your heaters don't run all the time, but you really can't skimp here, for the health of your fish. It's the pits, but what is there to do?

A little tip/help to try cut down your electricity bill:

Go to Lowes or Home Depot (or B&Q if your in the UK) and get a sheet of polystyrene insulation, more if your tank is big or you have MTS

Cut the sheet or sheets to fit the back and sides of your tank. Run a thin bead of silicone on the sides of the sheet(s) and attach them to your tanks.

You can even spray paint the sheet(s) before attaching them to the tank(s).

Please use care when cutting the sheets and using spray paint or silicone sealant. I take no responsibility for any harm caused to you or others by using this information. You use this information at your own risk.
