Atlanta Area Aquarium Association Club Meeting

Dino and I -just- got home... (1:45am eastern) from a club meeting in Atlanta. It was awesome, the speaker was flown in from San Jose, and spoke on african cichlids. The speaker and his wife have travelled to Africa and scuba dived in Lake Malawi and Lake Tangynika (spelling?). Awesome underwater photography.

So there are members that bring in an item or two at the meetings for a mini-auction afterwards... Of course we brought home some new fish.

1 pair Betta Coccina. The seller lists them as max size of 1.5 inches and a softer water preference. (Of course our outdoor pond has been setup long enough that the water is probably 95%-100% rain water... so we have plenty of soft water for them. (Cute fish... look kinda like a mix between a mahachai and a splenden...but dwarfed.

1 pair Betta Falx. The seller lists them as max size of 1.75 inches and a mouthbrooding betta species. They look closer to normal betta size and have the finnage kinda like mahachai.

And some black banded limia. We already have some of those, so that is no big find.

There were other less common betta species there, but our friends were bidding on them and in the Atlanta club there are certain friends of ours we refuse to bid against. (We will get babies of anything they breed, without question, so why not let them do some of the breeding. )

It was overall a very fun afternoon trip... 3.5 hours down there (due to a couple of traffic jams that Atlanta is soooo famous for.) Only took 2.5-3 hours back... cuz it was 11pm when we left and at that hour there was no traffic and a very deserted fast lane.

Anyway, we'll try to get pictures up after we get the fish settled in tomorrow and they have time to unstress themselves.

On a side-note: The speaker said a friend of his did a small study about mouthbrooders and what caused the fry to go for mama's mouth when anything came near... so he made a model fish and took parts away each time to see if the fry would stop going for the mouth when frightened... essentially they are just going for a dark hole, because he made a fist with his hand and they went for the dark area between his thumb and index finger. How cool and interesting was that?!
