A Fishy Story Indeed..

How's this for bizarre? A letter that a young girl in Japan sent into the sky in a balloon some 15 years ago has been found on a fish hauled up 3,300 feet below the Pacific Ocean! A fisherman found the still legible piece of paper sitting on a sticky flatfish in his catch along with a torn-off string and the fragment of a red balloon. The letter had been written by Natsumi Shirahige, who was six at the time, and released into the air from her elementary school in Kawasaki, about 90 miles from where the fish was caught. The letter read, "Our school is 120 years old. If you pick up this letter, please write to me." Miss Shirahige, now a 21-year-old college student, said, "I can't get over the wonder of how the letter survived 15 years. I never expected I'd get a reply this way". (Yahoo News)

Sad reality?.. she probably communicated a lot faster that way than I do with my cell service provider!

This is actually the reason that you shouldn't release balloons. They eventually deflate and become only partially buoyant. The salt water begins leaching color out of the balloon, and it soon starts looking like a jellyfish, which is a staple food for many animals.

Not to sound like a crazy environmentalist or anything...Yes I know that this was a while ago before they really thought about it but Isnt eating ballons bad for fish?...like a choking hazard?

That's what I was getting at. Fish, turtles, even whales have choked on balloons. And yes, it was quite awhile ago, but it still happens.
