Im SOOO MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I was getting ready for bed when i hear CRRRRRRACKKK i jump out of bed and i see my 1/4 inch glass top over my 56 gallon tank has cracked into 3 large pieces! Fortunatly no one was hurt and no glass got in my tank. I dont get it thought it just randomly cracked and its in a super wierd pattern nothing fell on it and the only thing on top if it was my 55 watt PC that weighs like 5 pounds but spanned the whole tank! Here are some pictures of the disaster!

That sux, how it broke like that. All I can think of is that maybe it had a flaw that gave it a stress point and that caused the glass to break apart.

my dad thinks it was from the light and heat that was on top of it. I dont thought it was only 55 wattc of Power compact.

My little compact fluorescent does put out quite a bit of heat. It's almost too hot to touch, so I have it propped on "legs" (they're actually clasps to hold conduit against a wall) to keep it from overheating the glass.
Still, it's odd that the glass would have broken. Unfortunately, that sometimes happens. Something just has a tiny internal flaw, maybe a little airbubble in just the wrong place, and breaks under slight pressure.

Just a flaw in the glass itself I think. If it was supporting nothing but itself, then it likely was the heat from the PC fixture that made it fail. Glass will break in weird patterns, it's the nature of the material. Do you have any air gaps between the bottom of your fixture and the glass itself? The constant warm (on) and cool (off) cycle is probably what did it in and it just gave way and broke.

That is a very weird pattern. Fortunately none of your fish were hurt.

56 gallons would not be so bad. i had my 125 blow out the bottom once. still to this day do not know what happen. walked around the corner heard a big POW! took about 10 seconds and the tank was empty. i found fish in the basement. filled up the bathtub real quick and declorinated. out of 24 fish i lost 3. the manufacturer replaced the tank for free and the insurance company replaced the old beat up carpeting that was in there. still was a big job cleaning up tho and even tho the fish survived they all looked pretty beat up.
