Newbie here

Hi Everyone! I just purchased a 5 gallon Hex aquarium and would like some thoughts on what would be good for that size tank. I was thinking about angelfish but after doing a little research, I see that size tank won't work I saw some really cute little albino frogs I would like to think about getting but what type of fish would you recommend for this size aquarium? I've had bettas for years but no other experience. Thanks for any input

I'm pretty sure the albino frogs don't stay cute and little. They get massive and eat other fish. An african dwarf frog would be fine though, because they stay quite small.

That is a great size tank for a betta. However I'd recommend going for a female betta, since a lot of males have flaring issues in hex tanks (I guess because of the extra sides = more reflections). Some ADF's would be fine in there too...or you could try both a betta and an ADF. Other choices would be dwarf shrimp or a trio of endlers. Unfortunately the majority of other tropical fish get too big for that size tank.

Welcome to the site, by the way, Cheetahkita!

I would agree with Omorrokh, a female betta (which can be just as beautiful as the males) or an African Dwarf Frog, or one of each.

Some of the colorful small shrimp would be pretty with some live plants in there... cherry shrimp or some of the cardinia species (we have a lime-green colored small shrimp that is real cute.)

Or you could save up your money and buy a 30g tall tank and get a pair of angelfish with some bottom feeders or something and have a betta in the small tank. (Induced Multiple Tank Syndrome at its best)

Hi, Cheetahkita, WELCOME to FISHLORE.

I am fond of shrimp, what ever you put in, please read everything here under "articles" at the top of the page for beginners. Pay special attention to the nitrogen cycle, and cycle your tank before adding anything. This will give you lots of time to research what you want to go in.....Good Luck

some fancy guppies would be nice since there is a lot of variation in their coloring.

Welcome to Fishlore!

I think a 5g would be good for an ADF, albino or regular coloring.. or you could put a dwarf puffer in there, maybe 2 if you want to do extra cleaning. Endlers would be good and you could put 5 of them in there. A trio of guppies would work too. You could even consider making it a shrimp tank.
