Enough Room?

I have a 28 gallon tank with one three inch long tiger oscar and a pleco. Will I have enough room for some silver dollars

Hi Joseph. Unfortunately, no.

Your Oscar alone is too big for your tank. If your pleco is a common pleco, you will need to either find a new home for your fish or upgrade your tank to a 55g, at least.

Oscars are huge, territorial fish. They can reach 12 inches and are very heavy waste producers. A Common Pleco, is another giant, coming in at about 18 inches when fully grown, they are also heavy waste producers.

So you have a bit of a dilema over there.

Wish you the best of luck.

Your tank is much too small for an oscar, even if it is a juvenile.

55gal is minimum, and you will have to plan on moving up to at least 125 gallons within about 6 months. If your pleco is a common pleco, that also poses a problem with space.

At this time you just don't have room to add other fish.

For one oscar and common pleco I'd go for 75 gals min. I'm not sure about compatability with silver dollars but you'd need a way bigger tank than that to add more fish, especially since I'm pretty sure silver dollars are shoalers.

Even 75g would be potentially fatal to a full grown Oscar. They have a tendancy to bash their brains in hitting the glass in smaller tanks. I'd want a 120g to keep Oscars and 2 or 3 could be kept in a tank that size.
