My my my, how things have changed!
I was digging through stuff my dad had stashed away from his 55 he had when I was a kid, and I found this 1970's style HOB. I have two different sizes of the actual box, one is about a half gallon, the other is a little over a gallon and a half. Lots of the siphons (I tossed most of them because of stress cracks,) bottom plates for both, and even the motor for the larger one. It ended up in the trash as well, soon as I plugged it in, it started smoking and making a terrible racket. Anyhow, I thought y'all would get a kick out of the paperwork.

Wonder what I could do with the bodies, they're too nice to toss, but serve no useful purpose to me. Anyone want a mini hang-on refugium?

That's about the time my dad started our tank (late 60s/early 70s), and I remember he didn't get a HOB because they were way expensive at the time, compared to the little filter that sat in the corner and ran off the air pump.
Of course, now I know better, and realize that little filter wasn't enough for a 20g tank, which explains why it was so hard to keep the water clean. But aquarium science wasn't quite as advanced back then, and/or it wasn't as easy to get the info you needed like it is today.

Hi, new to the forum... Just browsing around when I saw this post
WOW, I had that exact filter in the early 80's.
I also remember the little filters in the corner, you put glass marbles in the bottom to hold them down and filled them with angel hair (fiberglass).
Thanks for the flashback!

HI JOE , stop by and introduce yourself in a new to fishlore thread. We would love to hear more about the "old days"......and what you are doing in fish today.
I agree, flashbacks can be fun - and not so much fun also, I remember my first tank with angel fish....it was a 10 gal and guess what, they didn't make it....Doing much better now. Much better equipment, and knowledge sharing helps tons....

Yup, that's what my dad had in our tank way back then. Except he filled the bottom with carbon, and then the angel hair. And had the noisiest piston air pump to drive it.
Oh, and welcome to FishLore!

Even More fun from the Past, I was putting away my powerheads in the aquarium cold storage cabinet and I found the receipt for my tank.
The " Master Kit" retails for $361.93 today. This is a Perfecto tank, hood, and single strip 40W fluorescent light, Aquaclear HOB, Perfecto UGF with two Hagen 301 powerheads, 60 lbs of gravel, 200 watt heater, a stick on the glass thermometer, and other assorted stuff. And a $10 rebate for fish. That's not as big of an increase as I would have expected, only a $16.37 increase for retail over the past 17 years!
