any seahorse owners

hi does anyone on here have seahorses. just wondering, not planning on getting any but they are beautiful and like my favorite animal would love to see pictures and stories. i also know they are difficult to care for so dont know if anyone would.

Re: any seahorse owners

They're on our "Someday we'll get these" list, but not until after we have a good amount of experience with saltwater tanks and plenty of research and preparation for a seahorse couple. With their status in the wild and level of care needed, they're definitely only for the experienced (with some deep pockets for all the cost :) They're such a beautiful example of aquatic life.

I'm toying with the idea of possibly setting up some sort of 2.5 or 5.5 gallon refugium under my display tank with some miniture ones after we move if we do. They are a bit harder to feed though, but from what I've read some species actually aren't that hard to care for or that expensive so they could be in the near future for you flbc.

LOL.. don't tempt us! we're already going into debt with the recent addition of 7 bettas to our family. : I'll have to research them a bit more and perhaps in the future when we can buy food again we'll have to see what costs and care level we'd be looking at.

Hopefully your bettas will soon have some fry and then maybe you can find some good homes and get some money back to buy more

Re: any seahorse owners

how much do they run for...curious again maybe in a very long time from now i could get them. i saw documentary on how people in little islands pick them by the dozens tie a string around they're neck and leave them there to dry *for medicine). i know these are only some peoples source of income but its so sad. even if they find pregnant males they'll dry them. They're endangered and so beautiful...but it is thought in 10 years if they are taken by the numbers they are taken now (for mostly chinese medicines) they'll be extinct. its sadder to me because of how peacful they are, and they already have so many predators besides humans.

Re: any seahorse owners

If/when we got some, we'd definitely want to breed them and get networked with other breeders to work on building a genetically diverse captive population should the day come when they're extinct in the wild.

Yeah I don't plan on getting into salt water tanks, but I do love the seahorses. Here is a site that sells some, but they are pretty expensive (some under $100 though). I have a rule that I won't keep anything that costs more then the tank I keep them in . And this site just has some good information about them (especially the one's I'm always tempted to buy (photos on this site))

Re: any seahorse owners

Those are some stunning beauties.. and some stunning prices! Such a beautiful sea animal, I could be happy with a SW tank that had a pair of them, a pair of maroon clowns and a pair of anemone plus shrimp and plenty of live rock and live sand.

I think I'd be just as happy with the $1000 that would cost in my pocket .
