We are using a soil substrate for 2 of our 4 tanks (a 46g and a 6g). The brand is called GEX. We have been using the soil for about 18 months. As we will be moving house shortly, I was wondering if it is necessary to use new soil or continue using the same stuff that we have been using and is in our tanks now. I would prefer NOT to change it if possible. The reason I am curious is because I recall that when we bought the soil about 18 months ago, the staff at the pet shop said that it needs to be replaced every year. It isn't cheap here in Japan. It is over $20.00 per 8kg bag. For our 2 tanks, that would mean 3 bags or over $60.00. You feedback is appreciated.

*Rather than contact the pet shop, I thought it would be better to get a more objective / impartial view!

i personally don't see a real need to change the soil. do your plants get fertilizers aside from the soil?
