Special Mtce

I live in a hurricane area and am wondering what I should do when it is manatory for us to evacuate. By this time the power is off.I have someone that will come in and feed but what about the filter not running. Would probably be away from home about 3 days. Of course, I am assuming the house is still in place and liveable. Thank you, Norm1

Re: Special Mtce

I'm in the same boat and unfortunately there isn't much you can do if you aren't in your home. The only options you have is to run things for as long as you can and hope for the best till you get back. One thing you can get is a battery powered air pump like this one. Use it in your tank as a normal pump if you want, but note that once you know you are going to lose power, move the air stone to the top of the tank. If you leave it at the bottom of the tank and the filter isn't running then the water in the tank isn't circulating. This will cause pockets of toxic chemicals to build up at the bottom of your tank. If the air stone is at the bottom it will churn these up and mix them into your tank, if it's at the top it will only aerate the tank. This battery powered pump should be set to the 20 hour mode so it gives the most amount of time it can before it dies. This will only give you an extra day but it's better then nothing. I have also heard of using solar panels to recharge batteries. I haven't looked much into it yet, but something like the second one shown on this page might help make this more of a permanent pump. It would be charged during the day and at night would work off the battery. As long as it can be fully charged before the sun goes down it just might work (again I haven't tried it).

If you are in the house and lose power then I suggest a power inverter as I mentioned here. Hopefully we won't have to deal with it this year (or any year for that matter)... Good Luck!
