How to fill a 55....

I'm moving my four clown loaches and my pleco into the 55. What else? Another clown? I was thinking some dither would be nice. Suggestions?

Re: How to fill a 55....

Congrats on the bigger tank!!! With four clowns and a pleco you have about all the bottom inhabitants you can support me thinks. Since the clowns you have will outgrow the 55G eventually I wouldn't add another.
Yes dithers would be nice, hum...... Mixed varieties of Danios for top water dither and maybe Rasboras... just remember what ever you put in , the clowns will check them out so it can't be anything particularly slow or nervous.
My clowns have never hurt another fish that I know of but they are always being nosy.

Re: How to fill a 55....

Okey dokes...dano, what's a red tail? I thought the clowns and the pleco would cap it, but I was hoping against hope that I could squeeze in one more...I haven't bought fish in a while, lol, but I'll look into the others.

To anyone, what's your substrate? I was thinking I'd do something "fun" and get some pool sand going. If you have sand in yours, how do you gravel vac successfully? What's your filter system?

Re: How to fill a 55....

I have play sand in one tank and cichlid sand (sahara sand by carib sea) and they are very easy to clean. Tennhound(my daughter) uses pool sand and swears by it. so either one is cool.
I just kind of wave the vacuum over the sand and waste and trash floats up and is sucked away.
Have fun!!!

Re: How to fill a 55....

I checked out the danios and the rasboras, Butterfly. The rasboras are pretty cute...the store had scissortails and harlequins. But they also had penguin tetras whose schooling action was entertaining.* So I think those will be the three that I choose from. I have a while to make a decision. My 55 had a leak, so I'm waiting on another.* I was a little bummed; I'd just filled it when I noticed a steady trickle from a corner. It takes a lot of trips to fill a 55! Positively backbreaking work with a bucket. Next time I just may run the hose through the house. That's an idea! Should I? Shouldn't I?
Anyway, they tested the new one for leaks before they called me, because apparently the one I bought last week was brand new, as well.* I think they were just telling me anything because the tank was covered in dust and cobwebs and filled with carcasses of dead crickets.* That's okay, though. The new one is sitting on the stand, waiting for the magic.

Re: How to fill a 55....

Yep, by all means run the hose through, Fill the tank , dechlor and let set over night with the heater to stabilize the temp. I do bucket duty too so I understand the amount of work.
Sorry to hear about the leak, glad they tested the new one
