Breeder fish vs store fish

First off, this article is about a general trend, saddly not all private breeders fit the following generalization.

I noticed several folks talking about the lack of color in their female guppies.
Below are two pictures of FEMALE guppies from breeder stock that I have here.

Young half black female guppy

2 Adult female yellow platinum guppies

I hope the difference between these fish and what is generally seen in shops is obvious.
GENERALLY, fish purchased from breeders are of a much better quality than shop fish.
This is due to the fact that shop fish are mainly pond bred vs breeder fish being raised where the lesser fish can be removed from the breeding program.
While not as glaring with most other species than guppies, breeder fish generally have better color. They are also ususally in better health.

So if you have the chance, use the various auction sites, join one of the national clubs or try to find breeders close to you.
It is well worth the effort.

Re: Breeder fish vs store fish

Another difference between the two types of fish is the amount of crowding the pond fish face vs lesser crowding in a breeders set up.

Once things get warmer, I will gladly ship you a trio of any I have available, no cost.

NOTE:

This is not an open invatation for me to ship fish to every one on the board at no cost.

Re: Breeder fish vs store fish

Dino when my adolescent platy grow up some more would you take them from me for about $1-2 a piece? They are either just a plain orange or a brown body and an orange underside. They are from about 5/8-1" in length and about 3-8 months old. If you want any other info just let me.

Re: Breeder fish vs store fish

Shipping across borders is too much of a hassel.
It generally cannot be done fast enough that there is not a danger to the fish.
Cost is also outragous.

Re: Breeder fish vs store fish

Ok, just wondering b/c you would probably have a better chance of selling them than I would.

Re: Breeder fish vs store fish

Ok thanks Dino, I'll talk to you later if I get a refillable credit card to pay for shipping. Do you feed your baby guppies anything special? I feed mine baby brine shrimp, veggie and tropical flakes by omega one and then bloodworms later on.

How can I find if there's a breeder near me?

Re: Breeder fish vs store fish

Can look online for a fish club by you and ask your lfs's if they buy or know of any private breeders. If you tell what major city your by someone here might know of a club.

p.s. Dino you can remove that about the fish that you can ship, I can remember that if you don't want to worry about people asking you

Oh sorry, I thought my location was listed under my flag. At least that's how it's setup on my other forum. I'm near Columbus, Ohio. What does lfs stand for?

Re: Breeder fish vs store fish

LFS is local fish store.
I know of at least one club in Columbus.
I also know of a decent store, I believe it is called Ocean Adventure.
Cincinninatti is having their spring auction on April 14th.
Last time I was there, they sold over 1000 bags of fish and plants.

Hope this helps,

Re: Breeder fish vs store fish

You don't have to be a member of the aquarium clubs to go to the auctions either It's a great way to get to know people with some of the same interests as you.

Re: Breeder fish vs store fish

Aquarium Adventure is my favorite store. I just got my current fish there last weekend. I'll probably just stick to going with them. I looked into the Ebay stores mentioned and shipping is just outrageous. I looked at another site aquariumplants.com and picked three plants I liked and wanted it to calculate the shipping, and it was $40 to $60!! I think the stores are my best bet.
