Aquarium Salt?

I have a freshwater tank about 4 months old. Fish shop told me I needed to use aquarium salt. It's not the same salt as used in marine setups. The way it works is you add 1 tbl spoon per 10 gal. Says it contains electrolytes and stuff. My question is this so called salt needed or not? The tank and fish are doing well no problems to speak of. Just not sure if I was sold some B.S. or not.

Re: Aquarium Salt?

I dont like adding salt to my aquariums it causes more problems than not, its dangerous for any cat fish or scaleless fish. although it depends on what fish you have. Salt is usually used to treat your fish when they are ill.

Re: Aquarium Salt?

No salt of any kind is needed in your FRESHwater tank As Kerryve said it can more problems than its worth, some fish are sensitive to salt and so will die.

Re: Aquarium Salt?

For some fish, however, it is a stress reliver. My betta gets stressed out if i don't put the salt in his tank.

Also, I heard put 1 teaspoon for every 1 gallon.
I don't know if it matters or not.
