Strange Behavior From Alpha-Male Live-Bearer.

My Live-bearer tank has two male Mollies, one of whom is the obvious Big-Dawg in the tank.. up to a week ago, his behavior towards a particular female Molly was one big mating ritual.. the spread sail-fin, the twisted body.. what I call 'The Dance Of Love'.. and she would always react by chasing him away.. recently, he's become quite hostile toward her, chasing her constantly and nipping her.. is that his way of dealing with her rejection?.. or could that possibly be a more aggressive approach to winning her over?.. is this something anyone with Livebearers has encountered before?.. I'd love to know.

Might want to give him one or two more females to spread out the aggression, the female needs a break.

Re: Strange Behavior From Alpha-Male Live-Bearer.

There are actually five females to the two males in the tank.. of the five, four have already had batches of fry for the two males.. the one that hasn't is the one that's now being roughed up by the alpha-male over the last week or so.. prior to that though, his entire attitude toward her was one of trying to win her over.

Well I haven't had females for awhile as I like the males more but I would think she would be able to hide since she's in a 55 gallon tank correct?

Re: Strange Behavior From Alpha-Male Live-Bearer.

.. In a perfect world, maybe.. but sometimes fish behave like chickens, no sense.. she would keep coming around him or he would keep roaming the tank as if on a 'seek and destroy' mission, till he found her.. the point is now moot though, because within the last hour I gave her along with another white sailfin female to my neighbor across the road who has a well built large outdoor pond stocked with Gouramis, Koi, Swordtails and Mollies and lots of plants, and they've been replaced by two young females of breeding age from another tank.. so she'll do fine over there I'm thinking, and the female to male ratio in my livebearer tank is back to good.. thanks for your input guys, problem solved.
