Scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico say they have successfully trained honeybees to sniff out bombs! The bees have learned to stick out their proboscis – the tube they use to feed on nectar – when they smell explosives. The researchers say obviously the project could have far-reaching applications for homeland security and the Iraq war. Dubbed the Stealthy Insect Sensor Project, the trained bees can recognize everything from dynamite and C-4 plastic explosives to the Howitzer propellant grains used in improvised explosive devices in Iraq.
