Store bought or Tank raised

Store bought or Tank raised ? general question if their is a difference if you by a fish at a store
or if they are born in a tank and are raised in that tank such as mollies and platys. are they heartier.

Re: Store bought or Tank raised

It boils down to the conditions that the fish are raised in.
It has been my experience that hobbyist bred fish are better stock.
Both health wise and genetics.

Re: Store bought or Tank raised

My baby angelfish are a couple of months old right now and while I can't really say how long they'll live and how healthy they'll be in the long run, so far they seem very healthy and lively, and just so beautiful I believe they're having a far better life in my tank than they would have in a commercial breeding setting.

Re: Store bought or Tank raised

The store bought fish might also be wild caught fish. Wild caught fish are usually more sensitive to water conditions and could result in a higher fatality rate.

Re: Store bought or Tank raised

I believe wild-caught fish, of any species really, should be sold only to very experienced people. They should not be sold at regular pet stores as it will almost automatically guarantee they won't make it (since most buyers at regular pet stores are beginners or not very experienced people). It's a waste of fish life.
