Redecorating

Today I moved around the decorations in my tank and I have been amazed at the response. The fish are darting around. All my barbs and tetras are in one big shoal instead of individual groups. Also the colours are amazing. I have never really moved them this much before. How often do other people on here rearrange things?

Once every month or every other month. Unless I find something that I really like. Then I will leave it longer.

The fish seem to like it better when you rearrange it every so often.

Everytime you change it, it looks better though.

Example of four times I've changed one of my 29's.

yes i think i will certainly be doing it more often. However my RTBS seems to hate it. He is sat at the front of the tank glaring at me. Think he has lost his territory.

They will reestablish the territory soon. It actually helps if you have aggression problems, it forces them to get new territory.

I somehow have ended up with the softest RTBS ever. He has his territory but he never chases anyone. I had some very, new small banded barbs the other day and Milan (RTBS) let them hide in his cave with him until they were ready to explore.

I rearrange the Bettas decor each week when I do the tank cleaning and water change.

Question about redecorating...

The way I have my tank setup right now is rather tacky. Fake temples, plastic plants. I now realise I'd be much happier (probably my fish too) with a realistic looking tank with live plants too. My tank recently finished cycling though. Would replacing the ornaments cause my cycle to crash and restart again?

not really, unless you remove the gravel, which could throw you into a mini cycle.

no i think most of the good bacteria is held in the filter and gravel. I moved the tank again today because i brought some new decorations and my tank has not mini cycled so you should be cool.

Jen and Alessa are both right. The main locations of the bacteria are in your filter media and in your substrate. If you aren't replacing either of those at the same time then it shouldn't cause a mini-cycle. The live plants will actually eat up nitrates so if it does start a mini-cycle then you will have a little bit of natural aid towards the end of it.
