| What are the physical characteristics of a Flower Horn? I have a fish that looks like a flower horn but I am not sure if it is. I am trying to figure out what kind of fish he is.
Thanks Last edited by JohnSeito; August 23rd, 2008 at 07:05 PM.

| A flowerhorn will be a pink/orange hue in color (sometimes with white) for the overall fish. The pink is usually towards the head and chest area. It will have blotchy black scales in a line down the side of the fish and sometimes around the head. The scales will be pearly like, almost like spots or white dots all over the fish. Sometimes the scales are outlined in white.
Do you have a picture? That would make it very easy. |

| Thanks, my fish is pretty small right now, it is about 1 inch maybe a little more (so it doesn't have all the characteristic of a flower horn). The reason why I can't tell if it is a flower horn or not is because:
Flower horn in most cases have;
1 - red eyes
2 - black spots on the side and next to their eyes (at their temple)
3 - usually when they get bigger they have a bump on the top of their head
my fish:
1- have no red eyes
2- have blacks spots on their body only, not next to their eyes
Because of this I am doubting that it is a flower horn.
Here is a photo of how my fish looks.
Let me know of your advise. Last edited by JohnSeito; August 23rd, 2008 at 07:05 PM.

| It's a Flowerhorn (Flower Horn), not Follower horn BTW.
When I clicked on the link to the pic, it asked me what program I'd like to open it with and in the box was winzip. You might have a slight problem? |

| true you're right I mean Flower Horn. I winzip it because the file was too big, the document was a snapfire I believe.
But you did get to see the picture right?
So what makes you think is a Flower Horn? Do you think it will have a bump in front of it's head when it gets big?
and can you shed some light on what you know about Flower Horn (like food, how big they grow, agressive, etc), I am trying to understand him a bit better.
Thanks, |

| Ok here is the picture, hope you can see it. http://img149.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img4628tp8.jpg
This fish is about 1 inch or inch and a half. It doesn't have red eyes and it has black spot on it's side, but no spots on the side of it's head like the temple as you see most Flower Horn has.
It doesn't have a bump on it's heads either, I guess it is too young.
so tell me what kind of fish you think this is? Last edited by JohnSeito; August 23rd, 2008 at 09:11 PM.

| I think it might be a flowerhorn but do you know if when it gets bigger will it have bumps on it's head? And will they grow to be 12 inches?
Another kind of fish called firemouth looks a little like flower horn too so how you tell them apart?
And shed some light on flowerhorn like what it eat, personality, etc if you can.
the people at the pet store tell me that flowerhorn comes in different kind and the ones with the bump on it's head are more expensive.
I was wondering would all flowerhorn grow to be 12 inches?
The only full grown flowerhorn that I seen are the ones with bump on it's head. I have never seen a flowerhorn without a bump on it's head when it is fully grown.
So I was wondering if mine with grow with a bump on it's head. |

| Ehh that fish stumps me. Looks really elongated to be a flowerhorn, not real sure without seeing more pictures.
Flowerhorns grow larger then Firemouths, and firemouths won't have the same color across their body as the flowerhorn.
The flowerhorn should be treated like any of the large SA/CA cichlids. They can get pretty mean, especially because they are developed from the Trimac cichlid. Look up the Trimac cichlid, thats going to be your basic care for the flowerhorn. Most have the bump yes, not all the bumps grow as large as pictures on the internet show. You should see at least a slight rise yes, if it is indeed a flowerhorn. |

| Firemouths have red mouths, and are dark grey. Not your fish!
I think it's a young Flowerhorn, although I can't be totally sure. |

| It's a Texas Cichlid.
EDIT: To specify, it's of the "Green Texas Cichlid" variety. Last edited by Marc; August 24th, 2008 at 10:17 AM.

| It definently looks to be a Herichthys genus, which species....not sure yet. It doesn't scream Texas Cichlid (Herichthys carpintis) to me. How big is this fish? |

| The black blotches arn't that big though so i don't think its a flowerhorn. I was thinking more along the lines of a young Herichthys tamasopoensis http://www.cichlidae.com/gallery/species.php?s=215
Only thing throwing me off is the red lined dorsal fin and red tinted tail? |

Only thing throwing me off is the red lined dorsal fin and red tinted tail? | I love these fishy capers. Now you are going to have me on the internet all afternoon. Any of those species could be it...it's hard to tell...we need better pix I believe.
Here's some other pix of the one you mentioned: http://gratis-zoekertjes.onlinertjes...=2420&de=23354 Last edited by Allie; August 24th, 2008 at 01:08 PM.
