The top rim is aesthhetic, TRUE , but it also protects the glass from getting small chips when it gets banged.
The bottom rim is actually a cushion so if your stand is not quite perfect you could have pressure points, the bottom rim has a layer of silicone between the rim and the glass.
The most extreem example I have ever seen was a buddy of mine "Rodney" would set two wooden oak barrels with a 55 gallon salt water tank on top.
Only the center part of the two barrels touched the bottom rim, the outer part of the barrels were wider than the tank and did not support the bottom rim.
Well Rod built up a sucessfull busniess leasing these tanks to the local resturants in Sarasota, Florida.
He would maintain the tanks once a week, the resturants did nothing but give Rod a monthly check.
