2-3 minutes would be fine.

Live plants would be 10-15 seconds.

So time depends onwhat you are bleaching.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

For rocks and artificial plants just let them sit until the algae is gone. Remember to rinse extremely well and soak over night in strongly dechlorinated water.
Hydrogen Peroxide works well also.

I wanted to be funny too, but couldn't top what was already here - so on the serious side...I have brown algae on my holey rock and a bit on another piece of rock - surely some in places i don't see - should I bleach it? Just scrub it? Last time, I scrubbed it with water. that was when my nitrates were outta whack. I tested yesterday and nitrates were about 5. My life was not my own today but tomorrow is another day. A waterchange is on the books for the a.m. - Will that do it? I hate to rearrange things in the tank when the fish are content.

I really need an algae eating fish or two in there . then I'd need no bleach

i wondered the same thing but decided to play it safe and dip in bleach. dont forget the dechlorination dip though if you decide to. if your not familiar and someone please correct me if i'm wrong i use the same dechlorinator (prime) i put in my tank for water changes. i let this soak overnight just to be safe and because i dont know the right time to soak.

I don't have any cory's...except for Cory. ( ) He eats almost anything but I think he would draw the line at algae
Anyway, the cichlids don't seem to be muching on it. Will Cory's mix with cichlids? Can they live contently in a cichlid environment?
Thanks

FishFolk Texas Holey Rock gets algae and brown diatoms on it I think just as a matter of course. It's just so porous, I never bleached mine it just gives it a natural look and it won't hurt anything. The brown is usually diatoms and they will go away.
I have such a lazy out look on algae - it will either stay or go away with water changes a little looks good.
ER9- prime is fine for soaking after a bleach dip.
