We are moving to Missouri, St. Joseph area, when hubby gets back from his recruiting school. It will be a change to get used to the mid west again, we are from Iowa but in Texas right now.

Darlene,

We live just out side of Fort Leonard Wood and will be moving next july, let me know when you arrive and i can point you in the direction of a good fish shop for this area (and which ones to avoid).

lol, you sound like me. I got banned from a local pet store after stating my opnion that the people buying pups from the establishment were supporting the horrible puppy mills in the west. I was kindly asked to leave and not return.

To her defense the garbage disposal is a decent way to cull fish, its quick and painless. More so then the freezer.

The rest though is bad, but not totally shocking, its Wal-Mart. Luckily the walmarts here have stopped selling livestock. Good on you for stepping in. I'd be writing/calling corporate right now if i were you.

Walmart here no longer sells fish either. It's down to one pet store in this town...Petco, though the people there seem to know what they're doing. I've been offered a job on multiple occasions there, including this morning. They were busy back in the fish dept and some lady was walking around and asked me if I knew anything. I asked her question, and she wanted to know what she could put in her 5gallon hex in her kitchen. I told her a betta or some guppies, that's about it. Explained the whole nitrogen cycle. After she left the store without buying anything because she wanted to go home and do research, the manager approached me and asked what other animals I had experience with (turtles, tortoises, frogs, toads, birds, rabbits, ferrets, cats, and dogs, lol). Asked me where I was currently working, and offered me a job (based on previous experience and current employment), but they couldn't even come close to matching my current pay, and since it's already $5 in gas to get to work and back, I was not looking for a pay cut. I told him I would continue to be a customer though, and he said that was good enough.

Sorry for what you had to go through, but see how you get along without Walmart; after the 3 months, if you've made it work, still avoid Wall(of-China)mart because you can.

But there's no reason for those fish to be culled! That she would suggest doing that rather than just put them back in the tank... it boggles the mind.

Thanks, I will. We are planning on getting a big tank so we can get at least one oscar and maybe jack dempseys. I have been looking on line and found one in St. Joseph that sells tattooed fish I will be staying away from there.

Someday, the laws will change and fish will have some if not the same rights as fur pets. Maybe they will all get more. Scientists are proving that fish have feelings, intelligence and memories.
There is a connection between animal abuse and people abuse...people both do it. It says a lot about a perosn's character in the way they treat other living creatures.

Clove oil is better, then they go in the garbage. Flushing pollutes the waters.

Oh i agree with that, just saying garbage disposal ends it quick. Both are painless methods. When i do clove oil i just put them outside (depending on their state and why the were dying) to fertilize the plants and feed the wildlife.

Anna, good for you for speaking up - sometimes you just have to, it is the right thing to do. And probably worth the inconvenience. You go girl!!

(Geez, do ya think they have you on a "Lookout" - you could probably go in and they wouldn't even know )

A little clove oil puts them to sleep...much like you would be going into surgery. Lots of clove oil makes them not wake up from that sleep.
