I'm Getting It!!! My (soon to be) New 55

I came home tonight and the first thing my hubby said was "tell me about this fish tank you want." I had sent him a text message and told him that I had found the perfect tank on Craig's List that we should get ME for HIS birthday on Friday!

Anyway, after I told him about it he asked me if we needed to go pick it up tonight! YEA! I emailed the lady earlier told her I wanted it. She is asking $100 but I asked her if she would take $75. (I figure it can't hurt to ask...) She hasn't responded yet, but we have been emailing back and forth for a couple of days and historically she has not responded in the evening.

It is a 55 gallon tank that is currently holding water with no leaks. It comes with the tank, stand, filter and lights. Here is a picture of it.

I am so excited!!!

That is a great deal! Congrats on the great find. Any ideas of what you are gonna stock it with?

Thanks! Here is my initial stocking thought:

3 - Angels
8 - Cherry Barbs
6 - Cories
1 - BN Pleco

By my calculations that is 54" of fish. I am not sure though, will the cherry barbs become snacks for the angels? Is 3 angels a bad idea? I am open to any and all suggestions!

I already have extra filter media in my 30 gallon tank (just in case I need to cycle a new tank fast, right? ) I am going to go ahead and squeeze a little more in tonight so I can have as much bactera to add to the tank as I can.

That sounds like a great tank to me. 3 Angels may work and it may not. Just keep an eye on things. I currently have 3 angels in my 80 gallon tank, and they get along okay. My breeding pair won't let the 3rd angel near their eggs, but other than a little bit of chasing, its really nothing serious. The cherry barbs should grow big enough to be fine with your angels. I would suggest starting with adult cherry barbs and juvie angels so that they can grow up with the cherry barbs in the tank and get used to their presence. As far as cories go: sterbai, three lined, and panda are my favorite You can definetly seed the tank with your filter media from your 30 gallon. Adding a couple of mesh bags full of gravel from you thirty gallon and water from your 30 gallon will help as well. Good luck with the new tank!

Thanks for the info MissM! The angels scare me a little because so far I have mostly had "easy" fish...

I am thinking about pool filter sand for my substrate - the only downside is that it will show waste easier, right?

Also, I have not ever done live plants and don't really intend to, but don 't cories need a few live plants? Or am I thinking about ottos?

Well, I am officially bummed! She didn't email me back today. I sent her another email around noon and said "sorry if this is the 2nd email you have gotten, but sometimes when I use my work mail server from home it doesn't go through.." I told her again that I wanted it and I didn't even mention the fact that I had tried to get her to take $75 just in case that had made her mad. I am holding out a little hope that maybe she didn't have access to email today, but I am also going to start looking for another good deal...

I was running into the same issue, people not replying back. The people who did reply back had already sold everything. I ended up just buying the tank and accessories brand new am building the stand this weekend. I had some money saved but craigslist is a great place to find deals when your a little bit short on cash.

What makes me so mad is that she and I had been emailing back and forth for 2 days with me asking questions and then as soon as I said I wanted it, she dropped off the face of the earth. The least she could have done is told me that she sold it to someone else. Oh well, I am actually working on a deal for a larger tank for just a little more money and should know in a little while if we can go get it. I am just not going to get excited this time until it is loaded in the truck!

Good job Allie! If I get the one I want today, it is an 80g fully loaded with the stand... It is about an hour away but at $130 it is still worth it even with these gas prices!!
