A good way to support our troops

Anyone over 18 interested in helping in a small way might want to consider becoming a Soldier's Angel. I joined last week and have sent my first letter. I have found out that the soldier I've adopted is at a base north of Bagdad. I'm hoping he will write back and let me know where he's from, and what he wants in his care packages. What you have to commit to is that you will send a letter once a week, and at least one package once a month. The cheapest way to send the package is through priority mail flat rate boxes which cost $8.10 to send no matter how much the box weighs. You will also get a generic list of what they want and need. Many don't have time or just feel funny and won't write you back, but that's not why you do this. Once you adopt a soldier, you will have access to their forum where you will be able to find out about other requests, and what's happening on the front lines. I'm very proud to be able to do this, and hope that I can handle the sadness that comes along with it when you read about lives being lost, and the requests for letters to the family. But you also read about the progess being made over there and other things the mainstream news refuses to put on the air. It will really give you a different perspective on what this war is all about, and make you a little more proud of why we are over there. If you have the time and the dollars to do this, I think it will be a very rewarding experience for you!

Pity I'm not over 18...

Oh well, prayer will have to suffice.

Semper Fi, carry on.

I wish you were over 18 also! Here's a sample of what you don't hear about on tv or the radio:

dear all soldiers angels,
i cannot begin to tell you the response of counselation and encouragement that so many angels have sent to my e-mail over the past couple of days. thank you all so much. if you can imagine me sitting here, "henpecking" away on the computer for the last two days. it's kind of like watching paint dry. LOLOL. the first night i think i counted 50 e-mails from all different angels from everywhere. thank you so much for what you do. you guys and gals are the best! after all this mess is over with, maybe i will be able to sit down and have a cup of coffee with some of you.
i have more news, but of a more serious nature. 3 days ago, one of our sister companies in our battalion was attacked in the streets of northern baghdad. 6 insurgents drove up to a friend of mine and started shooting with ak-47s. luckily for him, God was watching and protecting him. he came out without a scratch. unfortunately for the insurgents, they messed with the wrong soldier. this particular friend of mine is a bradley fighting vehicle commander. he called the bradley up with a killer team of dismounts in the back of it. they ended up turning that whole street into swiss cheese. 0 americans were killed. 4 enemy dead. 2 enemy wounded. that is until a civillian driving a truck accidently struck 1 of the enemy as he was trying to get out of the car. medical aid was administered to the only remaining guy and he was brought in for interrogation.
i just thought i would share that with you guys. if any of you angels see our troops at brooke army medical center. please show them this post and tell them "alpha company sends their respect." i'm sure they'll get a kick out of it. well ladies and gents, back to work. i have many e-mails to answer. again, thanks for all your help guys. i couldn't have possibly have done this without you all. we love you all.
respectfully,
soldiermedic

Re: A good way to support our troops

Update. This was sent to the founder of soldiers angels:

Quote:
Today marks our units 125th day in Iraq and the days are dwindling fast. The Marines here have been working hard to keep the flight line running and insurgents from planting road side bombs and various other tedious tasks.

I want to share a moment when a Marine from our unit really had a gut check and to tell you how serious road side bombs can be here. A SSgt here, now GySgt; was called to duty one evening for a possible roadside improvised explosive device (IED). The IED found was about 45 minutes drive from our base. Once on site the SSgt was unable to see with the night vision goggles any visible signs of buried munitions past were the unit that had called in the threat had showed our security the location of a presser switch. Approximately 75 to 85 feet away from the pressure switch the SSgt, on his hands and knees started to shuffle his hands slowly back and forth just under and over the top soil along the road. After nearly 60-65 feet the SSgt located the explosives that were buried in a shallow hole, just enough to not be spotted by passing convoys. The SSgt ran his hand the length of the round only to feel that the detonation cord was taped along the length of the round and that there may have possibly be munitions right under the very round he was feeling. After the discovery, the SSgt’s team was able to dispose of the ordnance in a proper manner in which they have been trained. Once the ordinance was removed they later found out that if the SSgt had attempted to move the top round at all he would no longer be with us today. His courage that night meant the world to me and to my Marines. In his eyes he is just doing his job, in mine he saved someone’s loved ones and or one or more of our own that night.

So when we say thanks for the support me mean it! After a night like this and then receiving packages and letters from the US, our day is brightened for that moment in time. As we all know; our days are numbered but our brother’en will stand in our shoes and carry forth the mission after we are long gone.
