A turtle attacked our dog!

Heres a good one for you all! My mil heard a bunch of barking in our driveway, and low and behold it was joe (our dog, a lab) barking his head off at a turtle.....
His whole snout is eat up, w/ big chunks out of it, the turtle got the best of him!! Poor pup! I don't know what to do w/ him, he just healed up from the last incident, the barbed wire fence where he thought he was a cow dog.. Lets not forget the od de la SKUNK! for about 2 weeks, where he got a close encounter.. what to do w/ this pup?? hes in to everything!

Poor little guy. He seems a touch too rambunctious.
What kind of dog is he?

Edit: I'm an idiot. Says right in your post what kind of dog he is.

Awwww poor thing he sounds like a curious little bugger. I'm guessing is was a snapping turtle? They sure are mean.

They're not really mean, just defensive. They can't fully withdraw their heads like other turtles, so their defense, if they think they're being threatened, is to take huge chunks out of the attacker until it leaves.
Not something I'd want a kid or a dog messing with, definitely (I can't say "not something I'd want to mess with," because I will often stop one just to examine it for awhile. As long as you know where their neck stops, and can keep them at that range, you're good.

Learn something new every day here. I didnt know snapping turtles couldnt fully fold up in their shell.

I bet the doggie will not want to tangle with another turtle in the near future LOL.

That expression makes no sense. Cats are more curious as kitten...older they approach thing with caution. In a comical way usually.
Poor doggy. Labs are very hyper dogs...we had a pit bull lab mix....he thought he was Tigger.

I don't think so, this dog is a real hoot... I have never had one quite like him (I guess thats why he has really grown on me and all of my husbands family for that matter) we were over at my mils house only the next house over and he was w/ us, my husband tried to clean him up where he stays outside, first thing he did was run to the garden and make a big "mudpuppy" out of himself... (hes a yellow lab mix) so he was a riot.... my fil got the biggest laugh, he went right to him w/ his muddy self and jumped right up on him....
I have to say, I love joe to death, but hes like that goofy buzzard on that bugs bunny cartoon, not to bright! (I want to get a hold of that turtle btw, and snap him back for what he did!! Joes nose looks better, but a bad gash)

I'm sorry about your pup. I know all about those labs. I don't think they learn from anything. I have a lab/samoy mix. He's a beautiful dog, but boy is he dumb sometimes. Been hit by a car 3 times, he's been beat up by the cats countless times, and among other things. We named him Bubba and it turned out to be the perfect name. Matches great with his personality! Not very Bright! Good luck with Joe. Hopefully he's better at learning his lesson then Bubba is.

Some animals (including humans ) never learn. There's nothing you can do other than help them survive their latest escapade.

Oh the poor thing looks pitiful right now! Even w/ the flea meds we are keeping on him, and constant cleaning, etc he is getting "hot spots" where the fleas bunch up in one spot, he digs at that spot until he gets bald and raw. I feel so sorry for him this year! I am about to clean him up and put him in the house (if I knew he wouldn't destroy the house!)
Its an everyday job, my mil is putting medicine on him, and my husband.

Yep Labs are just that way We had Labs when the kids were small and the dogs were great with them. But even as they got older their curiousity and energy level got them into lots of scrapes.

Is there water near her driveway? It makes no sense for a snapper to be that far from water. As SirDark said, they need to feel protected, and water is one of their main protections.

not only do we live a mile away from a big lake but there are a ton of little streams close to the house, not to mention a pond in the back yard (in the cow feild) theres a lot of turtles, frogs, minows, etc in it
