So the apartment I just signed the lease on for August...

I read in the lease "No pets of any kind. If a pet is found in the apartment, leasee will be subject to immediate eviction."

I'm going to be calling the landlord on Monday.... everyone cross your fingers!!!!

Oh my, that sucks. You couldn't find another place that allows pets, mostly fish, so this way you can be happy.

Aww, that stinks. You'll just have to set it up in a closet or something. Make you feel like your livin on the edge. "Breakin the law" lol. All jokes aside I hope everything works out with you keeping the fish. You gotta do what ya gotta do though and a place to live is a place to live.

Hopefully all will be ok. Usually most places don't consider fish a pet, and the only rule I have ever come across for an apartment that had to do with fish was a limit on tank size and wether it was salt water or not.

Oh wow that sucks. You should check with them and see if fish count as pets. Even though we consider them to be our dear pets, aquariums are often thought of as simply decoration. Usually they don't want pets in an apartment because they are afraid the apartment will be damaged. I don't think fish would cause much trouble If you can't keep your fish I am so sorry. I hope that everything works out

You should check your landlord/tenant laws in your area.. In our area, there is no law that says u cant have pets.. Landlords try and say no pets. But if you sign the lease and move in with any pet, they are not aloud to evict you unless the pet is disrupting someones life. (example: barking all the time, other tenants are allergic, pees everywhere) By law they are not aloud to evict you for having a pet, and they have to find a good reason of why to evict you.
But honestly I dont really think fish count. I know in my lease it says you cant have any fishtanks over 25gal (shh we have a 29). But just to be safe and not get on the bad side of your landlord ,just check with him and be sure..

I agree fish shouldnt be considered in the "pet issues" of landlords..but the size of tanks should depending on the place being rented...dont want ya neighbors floating at 3am if floors cant handle it ...but landlords can restrict ANY pets and they do so daily with their lease agreements...so its not against the law here I still hope things work in your favor and I still have everything crossed!

Ouch -- good luck! I know many apartments we've looked at allow aquarium pets that "live exclusively underwater"...hopefully your apartment complex does something like that.

If you wanted to, possibly you can get out of the lease, if you tell them you were not aware that you couldnt have fish. That is.. if you wanted to find another place to live. If that is not an option.. its a real shame that you can not have a tank in your new apt. I do think that most landlords are afraid that a tank may break and leak water to the next apt down. It could be a nightmare.. and I guess they are afraid of that happening. What are you going to do if you cant have your babies! Ohhh that is soooo sad....

EDIT: just noticed that you have a ten gal tank. Is it possible that you can cleverly hide that small a tank somewhere, like your bedroom? With some kind of box that you can slip over the top in case they have to come into the apt?
If you have to give up the ten gal... maybe you can have a five gal tank? with your betta that you wanted. And if you show the landlord that you have something under the tank that would in an emergancy.. collect any water that may leak?

I would let them know and if they say no fish I'd say no to that rental.......There are plenty of places that allow pets and you should never have to give up a beloved pet when you rent an apt! I'm betting they say "YES" to the fish.....

Oh my,that is a pickle!!! I agree that most renters do not consider fish as pets, it usually refers to cats and dogs because they sometimes can be destructive Hopefully an aquarium will not be an issue for you!Good luck

I agree, I would bet they don't consider a fish tank as having a pet.

When you ask about it, the trick is in the wording, don't tell them "I keep fish" ask them how they feel about an ornamental tank. This is one case where people who don't look at fish as pets might work for you.

Most places don't allow pets because of the smell, damage and noise they can cause.....barking, chewing, having accidents.
Then there's the people who don't curb their dogs, ugh.

I dunno sometimes the cichlids get pretty loud... when they chase all the splashing... lol... I can hear them in the next room (seriously)

OK so This is my first post. And I just have to say I live in a apt. as well. I have 2 dogs 1 cat which my cat was a rescue. She found us at the store when she was a kitten. Anyway also a 55 gallon 20 gallon and a 10 gallon tank. Oopppsss I forgot to tell them about the cat and all the fish tanks. The maintenance guys on occasion have came by for routine things. But nothing has ever been said. We have been here 3 years in August.
I wish you all the luck in the world. But I wouldn't get rid of the tank! Then If it isn't avail. until August for move in then say I'm sorry but I found a better place. That I can keep My Tank.

Most apartments i find don't allow pets we had troubles finding the place we are in now. We had to do it really fast to because the landlord at our old place stopped paying his bills and all of our services got cut off. We got this place and moved in inside of 3 weeks. I'm so glad we just bought a house now i can have all the tanks i want. Here they don't have grounds for eviction unless its a nuisance so check the laws where you live.

Wishing you the best. I JUST got my first tank - It came with 6 fish - I gave away 3 the next day...and it was hard to do it. I've already grown attached to the moody little monkeys that stayed behind. So, I can only imagine how tough it must be for you! Let us know.

Im sure you will be able to get away with a few fish. I have rented a house letting the landlornd know that we had one strictly outside dog when he said absolutely no pets inside. I just forgot my two cats, ton of birds, and at that time mice and my fish. By the time they found out, they realised that we were good tenents and that the critters werent damaging the house and now they dont care. You could always say that you were just 'fish sitting' them for a week if ne one asks. If they ask again, say ur friend didnt come back for them and if they complain just say that ur trying to find them a new home. Lol, eventually they just get over it.

Hopefully, you'll be able to get fish in. The apartments that we're looking at moving to told us fish are ok, although they had a no pets thing too.

You could always tell them you are adding a water feature and just 'forget' that its a living one.

We told the guy it was a 10 gallon tank and he looked surprised like it was a HUGE tank! lol He told me he wants some sort of rubber or plastic matt underneither it. I can do that! lol

Yeah! My lease never mentions fish tanks. I have a 65 gallon in a third floor apartment... I never asked Just got renters insurance and was sure to ask if they covered flood damage from a fish tank... they do And I figure the likelyhood of it leaking is pretty low but better safe than sorry. The maintence guy comes in occasionally but he doesnt say a word about it.
