Got a job offer at the LFS

Well the only LFS in town is kind of a pet store at the same time - they sell some dogs, birds, reptiles, etc...but mainly a fish store. They do a really good job and stuff, I've always liked it. This same guy is always there, a younger guy - probably early 20s - and he's always real friendly to me.

Yesterday I went looking for some kuhli loaches, alas they had none...but he said he'd order some for me next week. Then he was like "Oh hey, do you want a job?"

Apparently they're short-staffed really bad in the freshwater department, and he's a saltwater person anyway so he said it'd be great if I'd help work in the aquarium area and deal with the freshwater people.

I guess I should point out at this point that I'm a high school student :P 16 to be exact, so it's always funny to watch this guy hit on me when I know he's got to be at the very least out of college. He's always *very* friendly :P

The dialogue went something like...

Me: Well, I would but I don't have a license at the moment, or a car to get here
Him: No car? Do you live downtown?
Me: ...no?
Him: How do you get to your classes?

He apparently thought I went to the local university around here. When I said I was 16 he got that "Oh " look on his face :P

Me: I was thinking of getting a summer job at one of the pet stores though...either here or Petsmart or something
Him: Don't work at Petsmart...come work here!

So what do you think? Should I work on the aquarium section over the summer? - I can work weekends until I get my license at the end of June and drive my dad's old car since he's getting a new one...

I only fret because I hear that some people start to hate fishkeeping once they deal with it all day...grant it, it'll only be a part-time job and their hours are very manageable...10am-8pm every day except Sunday, which is -6pm. Can't decide :P I wanted a job over the summer anyway so this would save me the hassle. I figure I'll talk to him more next week when I go to pick up the kuhlis.

I hope employees get discounts on fish

Im gonna be real honest here and hope I dont hack anyone off in the process... my opinion only here.. you will be sick of the "public" way faster then the fish..

good luck with the new job (if you decide to take it)

I'd take it, but be warned fish stores don't always do what's best for the fish. In turn you have to follow the stores policy not your fish keepers morals. But you could also be helpful in the meanwhile by helping people chose the right fish for the right sized tanks. ANd teach people how to do things right.

Yeah, I'd love to be able to stop people from making the silly mistakes I did when I first started fish keeping...specifically the overstocking. I hear the Petsmart and Petco people tell customers they can keep so many fish in a small tank, it's heartbreaking! The guy at the LFS though has always been very good about it. He seems to know what he's doing. I don't really know how they "Treat" their fish behind the scenes, but the tanks are always clean and clear...all the tanks even have a couple plants and decor so they aren't stuck in the middle of a plain box at least :/

Hey, I'd go for it. You have a good knowledge and love of fish.
You might as well work with the things that interest you and get paid for it.
Not to mention helping people learn proper fishkeeping.
