Okay so I want for my senior project in High School (I'm a freshman so I think I have enough time to do what i want to accomplish) I want to get feeder guppys and through selective breeding and things of that nature get them to breed pure lyretail. I have a 55 and three 20s to be devoted to the purpous (and also you can allways use those big plastic tubs from walmart) do you think that this is a do able thing? If not is there some sort of genetic thing I could do with guppys in this time frame. The project is sponsered by our biology department so money is not an issue.

I don't know much about breeding guppies for specific strains, but your project sounds amazing! Good luck with it, and please keep us posted

Dino would be the guy to consult on this. Sounds like you are going to have thousands of guppy fry....what are you going to do with them?

some will probably go to be fish food for my bioteacher's oscars. most will more than likely be sold back to the LFS as feeders ontill I get some good color, then as fancy guppies. I asked and they said they will be willing to buy them (very cheaply for the feeders, and more resonable for fancy) off of me. I just want some pointers from the more experianced and to be sure I'm not getting in over my head.

Yea, that would need a lot of smaller tanks I think to selectively breed and seperate them and have enough breeding going on to get to the goal. I think Dino knows more about this kind of thing than anyone else here too.
