Freshwater salt

How many here use this? My LFS recommended using it, and I also saw that "PETCO uses and recommends freshwater salt". After seeing the Petco signs, I dug a bit deeper (here on FL) and I think I found the answer as to why Petco uses and recommends it - it helps cure ICH!!! (see "Ich: and old cure for an old disease" or words to that effect) smack

Salt curing ick is like back in the days of 'strapping' when a person was punished with 20 lashes, then they threw a bucket of salt water on the open wounds!!! If it didn't kill em- it cured em!

Unless you are dealing with fish that are suppose to be in 'brackish water', don't use this. It is so much easier to just raise the temp up over 82 and hold it there for more than 2 weeks....

If after several days the salt specks don't disappear, and the fish start acting more lively, you need to get an approved ick medication, and follow directions. Many medications have to be used 1/2 strength on scaleless fish, or tetras. Many also cannot be used on shrimp or snails...

We don't use FW salt in our tanks and only recommend it for certain sickness treatments or brackish tanks. What cures ich is warmer water.

Freshwater salt

Hi!

... Is a very bad idea! The cure for Ick, as COBettaCouple says - is heat.
