water changes

I am new to having fish as pets and I want to know how often should I change my 28 gallon tanks water.

P.S I have a tiger oscar and a pleco, and I heard Oscars get quite dirty...

Hi JOseph, WELCOME to FISHLORE.

The very best way for you to know JUST what is going on in your tank is to get an API Master test kit.

Test your tank weekly, and do your water changes accordingly.

It is a good idea to start a journal, write down the test results before water changes, and the day after. If your nitrAtes read above 20 you need to do a 25-50% change. As your fish grow, this might mean more than once a week, but if you are testing, you can feel confident that you are ok.

This way you can also see for yourself why oscars and common plecos are suppose to be in a big tank. They grow fast, and can not be kept in small tanks. One last point, and you may know this already, but it is still worth a word of caution. Oscars can not be fed on a diet of just gold fish. They need a variety, and special attention to vitamin supplements, especially vitamin C.
Good Luck
