| Two Colors of Gravel In Same Tank Hello,
I'm new to the this website, very interesting site.
I am setting up a new 30 gallon aquarium. I want to put in two different colors of gravel...it has to do with the theme of my tank. Any suggestion on what type of divider I should put permanently into the aquarium (put in a bit higher then the gravel). I read on another forum that the colors won't stay separated well if I don't have some kind of divider.
I guess I could use a piece of glass but don't know where or how to get a small and long piece like that.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! |

| You could use something natural, like a piece of driftwood, or some rocks or slate. Some of the folks here have done just that to have a sandy area in a tank that otherwise had gravel, or to seperate planting areas from non-planting areas. |

| First off, Welcome to Fishlore. You could get some slate stone and hide it in the gravel so it isn't seem and have each gravel on each side. That is at least what I would do. Or you could just have one color on one side, a mix in the middle and the other on the other side of the tank. Just out of curiousity, what theme/colors are you wanting?

| Yes, the slate idea sounds great. Thanks both of you!
Well, I am doing a Bikini Bottom / Sponger Bob theme. I've purchased all the characters in addition to Sqiudward, Patrick and of course Sponge Bob's house. I want to make a "street" in front of the 3 homes with black gravel and the rest a mixed gravel (sandy type of look but not too light) I obviusly need to divide the black "street" gravel on two sides and the slate would look great. There is also a pathway to two of the homes that can be the same black...may not go to that detail...lol. The piece of slate I'd need would be slightly higher then the gravel to keep it divided as best as possible and it will kind of look like a curb...lol.
Now, any suggestions on where to get small pieces of slate like I'd need? Sorry to be a pain!
Thanks again for a great suggestion... |

| Lowes, home depot, garden center, pet store. Most of those places should carry it. |

| Right, thanks.
Although it will be interesting to see how I can get a bunch of long and not to wide pieces for the "curb"...lol... |

| The good thing about slate is that its not only easy but most of the time fun to break into smaller peices if need be. |

| if you cant find the slate you could use some kind of acrylic (sp ) plastic, the advantages of this is that with light heat you can bend it to the desired shape.
Hope it helps

Thanks again for a great suggestion... | Don't worry, your not a pain. Can I make a suggestion that I think would look cool. You have a white/yellow sand instead of the mixed color gravel and have large black stones(like river rocks) on the top and it would look like a road in a way, just not a paved one. This way, you don't have to worry about having them mix and it is easier to clean, just lift up the rocks, and suck up the dirt and other gunk and then just place them back to the same way they were before. Remember, it is just a suggestion and you have every right to decline it.
