fish tank setup

hi,
just got my first tank. need to find out a few small things for setup.

Do i need to leave the light, filter and heater on 24 hours a day or can someone fill me in as to how many hours roughly i need them on?

some easy fish to start with would be good too, any suggestions?

tank is roughly 2 ft long by 1 ft depth by 1.5 ft depth.

cheers
eo

Welcome eo,You should leave filter n heater on 24/7. I leave lights on between 10 n 12hrs but i have a planted tank so plants need light if u dont have real plants u only need light to see your fish. Danios are a decent first fish.

as leo said, filter and heater need to be on all the time, if you have live plants, the light needs to be on 11-13 hrs/day, if no live plants, 9-10hrs is fine

check this out for first fish

please read this also as it has really good info. and will help your fish survive

and remember not to add more than 3-4 fish every week

A word of advice.... when looking at how many fish to put in your tank, there is a rule of thumb... 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water.... and that would be the adult size of the fish... not the size they are at the fish store. Some of them can get quite big and if you went by the baby size you will very quickly have an overstocked tank go ahead... ask me how I know... lol (still looking around the house for where to put another tank to house some of the (too) many fish in the first tank!!!)
