Welcome to Fishlore.. http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm is a good page to read on the nitrogen cycle and getting your tank ready for fish.

The general guideline for small fish is 1 inch (adult size) per US gallon. For larger fish, such as Angels, Oscars, Common Plecos, etc. it's best to check the data sheet on that species.

Usually small fish like schools of 6 or more and larger fish like to be in groups of 3 or more.

Otos and Cory Cats are good for cleaners in a tank your size.

some good fish for beginner tanks include:
-dwarf gourami
-pearl gourami
-most tetras
-livebearers - guppies/mollies/platies/swordtails
-corie cats
-bristle nose pleco

Congrats on the new tank, with a tank this size you should be able to get a great variety of fish. Good Luck!
