Mystery Solved - Death Averted

Over the past week I noticed one of my beautiful blue dwarf gouramis had a nasty looking mark on his back, which if truth be known, I thought may have been a bite by my krib, Thor. It just looked like something had grabbed him from the top. ( See photo.)

This morning, after feeding the 55, I was sitting watching with a cup of coffee and heard a funny sound. When I looked over at the aquarium, I saw the same gourami, wedged in the "ship's wheel" ornament, which I had leaning against a rock.( see last pic) He was STUCK!

I freaked out but managed to get my long grabbers and pick up the wheel, only to have it fall, fish and all. I got it again, and it actually took a little pushing, but I finally got him free. He was kinda curled when he got out, but quickly swam away, hung in the corner. His "scuff" is now re-scuffed.

Well, he is not too smart. I guess I just assumed fish, like cats, wouldn't go where they don't fit, but I am thinking he saw some food falling, and went after it.

If I hadn/t been there, for sure I would have lost him. The scuff isn't down to the flesh, it just looks like his blue colour rubbed off. But he was pretty shook up.

He is now swimming with the rest of them and settled down, and the ship's wheel ornament is now laying flat on the substrate.

Oh ya, and Thor, my sweet sherriff, is off the hook!

Beware of space challenged fish and seemingly innocent ornaments!!

Val

I too had a problem with my car decoration in my betta tank..there was a sharp piece sticking out & I am pretty sure that's what my Betta kept tearing his fins on. Since it's been out his fin are get better slowly...he been dealing with fin rot.

AHH bless the little dopey draws!! Hope he/she is ok. Flame has found a new hiding hole in an ornament 30 mins ago so i'm worried about going to bed incase he gets stuck!! It's a cave log thing, he's had it since day one, i'm sure he knows it well but it's the first time i've seen him there!! A little nervous to leave him!!

LOL - sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind!!

I put a new log hiding thing in the 55 yesterday, in anticipation of either the otos or whatever catfish I get for there. I see tonight Thor has decided he wants it also - he already has the ship! He's got a little Donald Trump thing going on, claiming all the good real estate!!

i hope not or he'll toss the other fish out of the tank and say "You're fired" in fish talk then find a young fry.

There are several tree stump things, really a good size in there. Lots of hiding places for everyone, but Thor patrols back and forth between them all. But it was funny with the hollow log thing, cuz he went in, turned around and sat with his head sticking out. . Same as he did with the ship. He is a brat - and I just love his feisty, but gentle attitude.

I really enjoy the heirarchy of the 55g - everyone ( well, except devil spawn pearl gourami) has his place in the pecking order.

And I just experienced first hand the "social requirements" of schooling fish - I have 6 red eye tetras, but removed one to a hosp tank to treat a mouth fungus. The 5 tetras "schooling" seemed to falter somewhat, they were all acting like renegades. On the day I put the single one back, he swam over to a corner alone, and soon another went over and got it, they swam back to the others who were loosely grouped, and from then on they started tight schools again. That was the difference between 5 & 6 of them. ( Well, maybe I make all this crap up in my head as I watch them -
