starting up a new tank.......

Hey.....
I am going to start up a new 40 gal tank and because I am a beginner.......need help on what fish to put in the tank. I want colorful fish but, want fish that will be easy to care for until I can learn more about this hobby.
Does anyone have any ideas for me to follow??

Thanks for all the help.

Re: starting up a new tank.......

What are your natural water perameters? Do you have hard water such as areas like I live in that have large limestone deposits, or soft water like high altitude areas that have snow-melt for water? What is the natural pH of your local water? Do you plan to heavily plant the tank, moderately plant it, lightly plant it, not plant it at all. Do you plan to leave it barren or have lots of stuff in it to break up the line-of-sight of the fish. (that keeps aggressive fish a bit less apt to attack one another as the majority of a fish' aggression stems from sight) Do you want temperate waterfish such as goldfish, dojo loaches, whitecloud minnows or do you want tropical such as guppies, bettas, angelfish, cichlids, etc? Do you want something that will be apt to breed, or do you not want to deal with fry (babies) at this point in your fishkeeping?

is your tank a long tank or a tall tank? you might browse the fish profiles here to get some ideas on what you would be interested in.

my tank is a tall bowed front 40 gal. i have a algea eater now and just lost my three red bellie pacus...12 ". the tank was too small for them and i had to remove then to another place.

i have never owned fish before...that is why i was shocked when i found out the pacus would be monster fish. i hear gold fish are dirty fish and the only place for me to buy fish in this small town is Wal Mart.

I live in Oklahoma and we have hard water here. I will tested the water yesterday and the PH level was 7.6 and the high range ph was 7.4. I would love to have loads of real plants in the tank to make it look good...however in this town the only place to buy fish stuff is Wal Mart. I have seen several tanks on line and they look great. i would like tropical fish...but are they hard to care for? I'm not ready for fry...but i do like guppies.

Dino is one of the moderators here and owns a fish house and really knows his fish. We want to get fish from him since his are well cared for.
