NEW PROJECT

I just bought 20-gal tank. I plan to have 8 guppies, 7 zebra danio, 3 dwarf gourami, 6 tetra, and 1 Chinese algae eater. Are there two many fish? Will they live peacefully? Thanks.

Re: NEW PROJECT

The general rule of thumb is 1 gallon per 1 inch of adult-sized fish.

Chinese algae eaters can grow up to 11 inches long, so I wouldn't get one for a 20 gallon tank. As for the other fish...

8 guppies x 2 inches = 16 inches
7 zebra danios x 2 inches = 14 inches
3 dwarf gouramis x 3 inches = 9 inches

I'm not sure which tetras you want, so I can't calculate those...but you're already way over the 20 gallon limit anyway. Maybe a few less guppies or danios, or the dwarf gouramis, with some otos (instead of a Chinese algae eater would be a good idea) would be nice for that tank.

Re: NEW PROJECT

i love gupps lol ..i have 7 gupps in my 20 and i love them with a 20 its easier to keep one kind of fish because well at least dainos and gupps like to be in bigger groups.. maybe one or 2 gouramis and build from there

Do you know any active fish that does not require to be in a group? The only reason I like zebra danio is that they swim everywhere and very fast. Thanks.

Re: NEW PROJECT

To be honest, I'm not sure of a good suggestion. I'm more familiar with schooling fish (barbs and tetras), so I don't want to steer you wrong. Hopefully somebody else can weigh in, I just didn't want you to think I was ignoring your question.

Re: NEW PROJECT

I'm sorry but the tank would be extremely overstocked. A 55 gallon tank would be needed for that arrangement.

The aggression issue is uncertain. With enough room there's a good chance of the fish getting along but in more crowded conditions, the fish will feel more stressed and the chances of aggression increase dramatically.

Re: NEW PROJECT

This wouldnt work. I would only get 2 dwarf gouramis so that 1 wont be left out when they pair up. Also, plz dont get the Chinese Algae Eater. It will cause unwanted problems.
