priming new tank

If I want to set up a new tank
can I use water I've taken from another tank in a water change
to get the chemical action going ?

Re: priming new tank

Most of the good bacteria is in your filter, on the walls, in the gravel, or on your decorations. Water from another tank won't help you much in that regard.

Re: priming new tank

What about water from a deep gravel vac? Could you possibly get enough bacteria from that to help kick start the cycle on a new tank?

Re: priming new tank

it would be better to put your filter in the new tank or to take a handful of gravel from the old tank

Re: priming new tank

If you have time you could run your new filter on an old tank for a couple of weeks and then change the whole filter over with a couple of handsful of gravel and other decor from the other tank. Just a thought
