Hi Cody
well I cycled my 55g fishless, and it took me 24 days. that really isn't a long time to wait. Just feed the tank with a source of
ammonia, like fish flakes that will break down or if you can find some pure ammonia, you can use that as well. Others have had success doing that. I just used fish food and also a small piece of fresh fish, I used blue fish about a 3 inch long x 1 inch strip that I just left in the tank to rot and produce ammonia which started the
nitrogen cycle. I believe that all fish require aeration, so you should make sure you get enough going in your tank. All you need is one hose going into your tank coming off the air pump into a bubble wand or air stone. I'm also using an air pump that is rated for 30 gals and it gives me lots of aeration! Its a Rena Air 200. It would depend on whether you were planning on adding any more air devices like extra air stones or air pumped decorations, then you would want to use one with more power. But just for one air stone you have plenty of power with the air pump you have.
Just fill your tank with water and your additives and feed the tank fish flakes twice a day and then start taking water tests to watch for the changes that will indicate your cycle process. Its a lot better to cycle without fish, you don't have to worry about changing any of the water til just before you get your fish. Do not remove your filter media nor clean it at all during this time, as not to disrupt the development of your good beneficial bacteria.
Good luck with your new tank! What do you plan on putting in the tank in the way of fish?
