Re: WALMART!!! >:(

I'll admit, I buy my fish supplies at walmart (aquarium salt, filter cartridges, etc... heck that's even where I got my 55 gallon tank and stand) It's cheaper! I'm a single mom and a college student, so I like to save money. But I refuse to buy fish at walmart. I don't think I've ever been there when there wasn't fish dead in the tanks. I've found it is a lot better to go to a fish store to get them, even if it means spending a few more dollars. The fish will be a lot healthier!
Whoops, forgot about the bettas! I did get 2 of my bettas at walmart, I felt I had to rescue them. But they are different than the fish in tanks, so it's ok that I rescue their bettas = )

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

My betta rescues were one of those spur of the moment things. I was there picking up a few things and stopped to look at them and fell in love with Scuba and Strawberry.
Most of the time I don't even buy my fish food there, I like to get Hikari or Omega One for them. It's a little more expensive at petland where I go, but not by much.

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

I sometimes get my supplies there, and I only get fish that are in a very clean tank and everything looks perfect. I saw the most beautiful baby betta there today, he was only about 3/4" long and in a measuring cup, if he is still there tomorrow, I will go and pick him up and put him in a 2 gallon tank I have sitting in the basement(I will fill it with water form my 36).

THAT is the walmart corporate policy summed up in 1 sentence. LOL.. at least they're consistent in not caring anything about what customers think.

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

My walmart is actually an okay one. The bettas are in bigger cups than I've seen anywhere, even at my Petsmart, and the water in them is clean. I checked thier tanks, no deads that I could see, which is impressive. Only downside, several tanks were suffering from a really bad case of Velvet. I should bring that up next time I'm in there... If I make too much trouble, they might try to do something about it. And hopefully not throw me out...

FISH GIRL, to the rescue!

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

Personally, I don't like Wal-Mart as a whole (how they treat employees especially females, how they have succumb to lowest bidder, and how they come into small towns (any town) plow tons of trees for a store and then outgrow it and leave that site a cement garden only to move down the road and build bigger!) ANYWAY, my husband wanted to look at something at Wal-Mart and I took the kids to the pet dept. to kill time and I happen to strike up a conversation with an employee and he told me that Wal-mart was doing away with their live fish. Has anyone else heard that? I really don't see how it was ever profitable for them, but it must have been or they wouldn't have done it One can only hope.

Me, I'M A TARGET GIRL!!!!!!!!!! hahaha

I LOVE Super Targets!!! It doesn't hurt that they have a Starbucks in them too!!! Their sushi is great too! Is it bad to love fish and eat them too? Sorry if I offend the tender-hearted.
Dave, will you go into temperature shock? I mean FL to CO is quite the polar opposites---to acclimate yourself, do you plan on using the drip or bucket method? Sorry! Couldn't resist!

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

I'm rather impressed with my Walmart's fish center. I bought my Oscar from the, and it came with a 90 day warranty. Petco and Petsmart only come with 15 days. I've had fish that only lived 16 days, and theyw on't do anything.

All of the fish I see at Walmart are happy and healthy at the one here. Of course...I'll buy the fish there. I stopped buying fish at the Petco near my house, because they kept dying on me. I did particpate in their sale though. Bought 3 tanks: 20L, 29, and 40B.

Honestly, I think it's about who works at Walmart. Our Walmart has this one girl who takes care of the department...I think she lives there. LOL And everything gets very clean.

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

That's Great!
Next time you are in, you should make a point to tell the manager how pleased you are and your preference to buy their fish. Most people don't ever get to hear the positive and it might make a difference in how they staff that area or how that section is prioritized to the rest of the store. Not to mention the girl who works that section (and lives there ) will see that her work makes a difference to someone else.
It's a win-win situation.

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

you would think so! i could do a better job working at wal-mart and i just started taking care of fish! mmmm...maybe i should start working there then there would be like no dead fish and the tanks would be clean! or not there tanks are so far diseased that there is no fixing them anyway!

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

It's just another example of irresponsible pet stores. If you wanna call Walmart a petstore, which it isn't. They don't care about the fish, they care about the turnover rate. If they can make money, that's all that matters to Walmart.

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

Never ever buy fish from Wal-Mart, Meijer's, etc. All those kind of chains just sells fish because its one more thing they can make money on, they do not treat them well and don't care about their welfare, always go to pet stores to get fish because it's their business to raise fish as well as possible.

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

a lot of pet stores aren't any better.. if you find any store selling fish that does a good job of taking care of the fish, shop there..

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

I just went to Walmart last night, (small college town, limited places to shop), and all the velvet was cured! I was amazed, and very pleased. One thing I wasn't happy about was their prices, actually. I was comparing to the prices that I know, and Petsmart is actually cheaper on alot of things. Bettas, for instance. And Rosey Red minnows. And probably on supplies as well, for me anyways, because I get a 15% discount. So I'm kinda neutral on the Walmart here. They don't carry dyed fish, but they don't particularly care about the fish.

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

There was a bad case of velvet in a tank at one of my LFS, actually. Made me really sad. I'll come back to check if they're OK.

Re: WALMART!!! >:(

Woemart. I hate Woemart fish department. I have made purchases there in the past but as I grew in the hobby I made a decision that I would no longer support their fish department. I buy dechlor there and nothing else. I came to the conclusion that I could never save them all so the best thing to do is to discourage the sale. If you buy their fish all they see is $$$. If the fish don't make $$$ then they will no longer sell them. If they no longer sell them there will be no more fish needing rescue. So, in the end I help rescue them all, or at least try to. As for the price issues. If we all started buying our supplies from petstores then they would be able to lower their prices. Me personally, I buy most supplies online.
