Changing a tank from saltwater to freshwater

There's a slim possibility I might be getting a 125 gallon saltwater tank for free. (I said slim. LOL)
If we got the tank, I'd like to turn it into a replacement/upgrade for my 45 gallon. What would be involved in changing it over? New/different filters? Heaters? I can't seem to find anything on this topic. It's a fully stocked tank right now, with tons of liverock and mushrooms, and three fish (two of which, my husband said, were tangs). The guy just doesn't have time to take care of it anymore. I'm not sure if he would just give us all the fish/liverock. If he did, I'd trade them in to my LFS for store credit because I just can't afford the upkeep on a saltwater tank. I know my fish would love the upgrade because bigger is always better.

I'm new here, BTW. First post. I have a 55 gallon cichlid tank, a 45 gallon tropical tank, a 10 gallon with a paradise fish, and a 5 gallon with white clouds.

Re: Changing a tank from saltwater to freshwater

Welcome to fishlore

Basically you'll want to strip the tank down, give it a good clean and set it up like you would with a new tank. The filter should be able to work with freshwater but we can't tell you until you know the brand the filter is. Also if the filter wasn't taken care of you may want to get a new one anyways. The heaters should be fine, though as long as they were taken care off. The light fixture should be fine, but you will probably have to buy 6,700 Kelvin type aquarium bulbs since saltwater uses different types. You will probably find powerheads and a protein skimmer both of which you don't need and can try to sell, though you may find you like one powerhead for more current. Really it isn't that hard, just need to know what type of equipment the tank has to know if you can use it.

Re: Changing a tank from saltwater to freshwater

welcome to fishlore. we've not been fortunate to get a tank that big yet, but i think if you post a thread in the "freshwater beginners" section, you'll find quite a lot of advice on good filters (probably canister or a couple HOBs), heaters (Visitherms), lighting, etc. from our members who have tanks that big.

Re: Changing a tank from saltwater to freshwater

Thanks for the welcome and info! I'm not sure what equipment is with it, so I guess we'll see and go from there. The biggest tank I have is a 55 gallon cichlid tank.
