Tankmates!!!
I have a freshwater ten gallon tank with 3 zebra danios, 2 corys, and 2 apple snails. Today I transfered them into my cycled and fully planted 20 gallon tank so I could get more fish. I really want more color in my tank. My danios and corys are extremely peaceful and even allow me to transfer them into their traveling tank by hand. The 20 gallon tank is filtered, heated, filled with live plants and plenty of hiding places. It's just lacking some colorful fish. I would love diversity, so anyone have any ideas? Also, how many more fish could I keep in my tank? The ammonia is staying stable at zero.
Thanks and Love,
Megan

Do different kinds of barbs or tetras school together? Like would black neon tetras school with cardinals? Or would cherry barbs school with other kinds of barbs? I would love diversity. But the wellbeing of the fish comes first.
Thanks and Love,

Re: Tankmates!!!
For fish the rule is, if it is the same shape and size, they will school. If you get a larger school of danios they would be happy. Then you could just get away with a small school of cherry/rosy barbs(one or the other, not both).

Thanks so much for the advice, I'll be headed out to my lfs in the morning. I was thinking of getting two more danios and 4 cherry barbs, does that sound alright? I don't want to overcrowd the tank but if I could keep anymore, please let me know.
Love and Thanks,
Megan

Re: Tankmates!!!
Check out the livebearer group.
They have alot of color, fin shapes and are usually very hardy, peaceful community fish... and the big bonus... LIVE BABY FRY! (some even interbreed)
Guppies
Mollys
Platys
Sword Tails
Endlers

I hate to shoot you down but, the danios could nip the fins of all the ither fish. If they interbreed, they can and will have fry with defects. I have had that experience happen to me a few times.

You could drop the cherry barbs if you wish and add more types of danios, there aren't just zebra danios, there are pearl danios, leopard danios, and a few other species. Try looking to see if they have any of those before, this way you can get your different looks of fish and they will all school together.

Re: Tankmates!!!
I agree Tom, but danios will nip the fins of alot of fish... thats why I got rid of mine.
As far as defects with the interbreeding thing... I had a platy/sword fry mix that didnt have any defects (but the fry drop was low...there was only 5). But for the most part they will not interbreed anyway... especially if thier own species is available for some fish hanky-panky.

Re: Tankmates!!!
You could get a total of about 8, if you go over 9 you will be overstocked and would have to get an even larger tank to accomadate them all.
Here is a list of the different types of danios out there for sale.
http://www.aquaria.info/modules.php?...txtstext=danio
I hope you have fun with picking out your danios.
And if you find any fish there that you like, don't buy the danios and go home and do research before hand and end up with a fish that will cause problems.

Thanks for all the help! I was wondering about something though, my lfs has so called "neon danios" that come in purple, hot pink, bright blue and yellow . The cost is around ten dollars each. Are these guys naturally that color or were they dyed?
Love and Thanks,
Megan

Re: Tankmates!!!
Here is some danios variants:
Zebra Danio - The fish is named for its five uniformly, pigmented, horizontal blue stripes on the side of the body; all extending to the anal fin onto the end of caudal fin rays of its tail. The males have gold stripes between the blue stripes and females have silver stripes instead of gold.
Pearl Danio - pearly blue-violet hued body is accented by an orange-red stripe running from tail to mid-body. Males are smaller, slimmer, and more colorful, often showing a red tint along the ventral aspect.
Leopard Danio - have spots on its body similar to that of a leopard spots.
Gold Danio - are similar to Zebra Danio in that it also have strips yellow-golden and white strips on the sides of the body;
Spotted Danio - have a blank line in their side, and below the line, small black spots can be seen.
Giant Danio - this danio can grow to 6 inches (15 cm). They are characterized by a blue and yellow torpedo shaped body with gray and clear fins.

Re: Tankmates!!!
they are also called glo-fish and are not dyed, but genetically altered with DNA from jellyfish which gives them the coloring.

Your welcome. The danios are neither dyed or natural, they are geneticly modifyed to look that way. It supposedly doesn't harm the fish, but I wouldn't buy them though, we don't know if they are safe for your tank yet.

The only one I wouldn't get on that list is the giant danios. They get way to big for a regular community tank. I have one question for you though, what are you doing with the 10 gallon tank that the fish are being transfered from? Why don't you get a small school of cherry barbs for the tank?

Thanks! I honestly haven't thought about the ten gallon yet. Right now it's just sitting there being filtered, heated and planted with no fish to enjoy it. Cherries would be cool to put in it though. I'll deffinitely stay away from the neons.
Love and Thanks,
Megan
