Hello all
My husband bought me a 55 gal tank set up and stand today for our 6 month anniversary !* Ive added a photo below.. My question that my husband Paul wanted me to ask is this:
He wants to know if its ok to use the outside rubber hose to fill the tank. We plan on filling it tomorrow and start a fishless cycle. I will have other questions to ask on this type of cycle process. I thought it would be ok to use the hose but he wanted me to find out from those that know these things.
thanks so much for your help, I am really excited about starting up this tank to house some oscars!*

I would be a bit leery about using the outside hose. Though it might be fine, you never know what crawled up there and died. I've smelled some pretty funky water come out of my garden hose after it's been sitting out in the sun all week. Granted I live in Florida so I might have different conditions then you do, but still the chance that something could be introduced has be a bit leery. If you really wanted to use it, then I would suggest taking it off the tap and flushing it out with boiling water. Then run the tap without the hose connected for a minute to flush it out. Then re-attach the hose and run it for a minute to make sure anything that was in there that the boiling water loosened, was fully taken out. After that just fill a cup with the water from the hose and let it settle. If it's clear and doesn't have a funny smell then it would probably be pretty safe at that point. Then again I'm always over cautious when it comes to this stuff, but the fish are worth it in my opinion.
By the way, that is a beautiful stand there... and yes I am jealous
I wouldn't use the hose, until I ran some water through it and tested the results. Yes, you're doing a fishless cycle, but...you might as not add to cycling challenges. I would take a water sample and test it, and make sure that everything is ok before doing it.
I, honestly, would consider an indoor set up, such as the python, from the kitchen sink, or something closer, if possible.
I'm, honestly, not much of a tap water fan, at least not for fish anyways.

Thank you
We have already filled the tank, using buckets of water from the kitchen tap. I started another thread, called "starting fishless cycle with questions",.., If your interested in adding any advice and comments there.
thanks, kate
Wow i am jealous to that is a very nice tank. That is a pretty neat stand with the fish cut out in the glass. Hope you can post more pics when you get fish and decor in it.

Hi Jay,
thanks! We cant wait to add fish too. I have a few things in the tank now and it has been cycling since june 18th, but not ready yet for fish. Im waiting on a nice piece of driftwood that I bought on ebay to be delivered soon. Here is a photo of what the tank looks like now...
