Automatic feeder?

Is an automatic feeder good for platys, guppies and a red tailed shark(hasn't harmed the other fish, just stays in corner and comes out to eat) in a ten gallon tank over Christmas break? (Not my tank, a tank at my mom's workplace)

Re: Automatic feeder?

I do not see what it would hurt. But it kind of depends on the type. Just be sure it is easy to set up and accurate. I would set it a couple of days ahead of time and let it feed the fish while someone is there to see how it goes so you can see if it needs to be adjusted.

Are there different sizes for them?

Re: Automatic feeder?

I was just wondering if you had any luck with the automatic feeder. I bought one at walmart, and i was just curious how well yours did the job. i'm going on vacation for a week and feel bad leaving my guppies/corys without food that long.

Re: Automatic feeder?

My mom got some of the vacation pellets that slowly fall apart for the fish to eat.

it might be a good idea to test it while you're still around to see how it works.

I've found that my mollies just destroy them on the first 2 days! It tried while I was at home to be sure.

Re: Automatic feeder?

i've heard those vacation things aren't very healthy for the fish... is that true? something about it just sits and rots at the bottom until you get back to take it out?
i set up the automatic feeder yesterday, so far so good. the only thing im a little concerned about is that it's dispensing a little too much food (even on the lowest setting) but i don't think it's too much to worry about (probably less than i feed in a day too!) i plan on doing some water changes before I leave and when i get back. (i did find a friend to check in on them in the middle of the week, just to be on the safe side in case one should happen to die i'd rather he/she not sit in the tank for 12 days while i'm gone.

Re: Automatic feeder?

is there different kinds of auto feeders? I'm going on vacation myself for a few days and am in need of someone/thing to feed my girls. My guppies don't really eat near the bottom so I don't think a vacation block would be a good idea, plus been having nitrite spikes so that may just make it worse as it dissolves and I am not around to do water changes
Anyone ever use the gel feeder blocks? http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS...dayfeeder106oz

Re: Automatic feeder?

My automatic feeder seems to be working ok, it was only $10 at walmart so it's really basic but i think it will do the job while i'm gone. I figured it wasn't that much more than the vacation feeders (which were $4 and up) and at least i can use it every time i go on vacation. i did see those gel things and was tempted to try them...let me know if you do and how they work out.
