reducing current out of a fluval

do you guys think this would be ok to reduce my current out of my fluval? it just blows water out so hard it makes little waves and it's like a river current. so i just rubber banded a chunk of filter sponge on there. my killies don't seem to like to go out into the tank, they just hang in a corner behind the return line, and i think it might be because of the current. it is probably the area with the least flow.

the only thing i worry about is if it will "pressurize" the return line and put stress on the pump. i think it is just more of a diffuser than really a restriction.

Did your fluval come with a spraybar? That's the general solution to reducing the current coming out of a canister filter. You can make your own with PVC pipe if you don't have one, or buy one pretty cheaply.

No problem! I don't think they are expensive to buy, but there are lots of examples online of people making them cheaply. Reducing the current (and reducing surface agitation) is the whole point of the spraybar. (With different placement of the spraybar, you can have surface agitation if you want)

I thought you could really throttle back the current on the fluvals by partially closing the stop valve. I believe it even says in the instructions.

I run a 305 and when I do water changes I throttle it way back so that the was its just kind of rolling out instead of gushing.

that's a good idea. didn't even think of that. but that would cut my GPH down wouldn't it?

i'm presently making my own spray bar. got about 10 minutes in it and about 4 bucks.

i'll see how well it works, then maybe make a DIY post.
