Hood vs Canopy

I've been scouting out larger (55g) tanks. I saw an ad for one that came with a canopy.
Is one better than the other?

Which do you like best and why?
Pros? Cons?

I think it all depends on the look you want for your tank. If your stand will match the canopy, I think they look very nice. Most have hinges in the back or the front panels lift or open for access to the tank. Make sure it comes with a (hinged) glass top to protect the lights and wood from humidity/moisture. Many canopies double as a great place to hide CO2 systems and all that good stuff. It's pretty cool to see the innards of some people's canopies.

I do not have any tanks with canopies but I do think they look much better when done nicely. If it's not that good and significantly more expensive than one with a hood, I wouldn't do it. Make sure you check for mold or wood damage on the inside, as well as the light, especially if they have not been using a glass top.

I like the glass canopies alot better. It's easier to change the lighting if you want to upgrade, and you can cut the holes to fix exactly what you're putting on the tank, not just the punchouts that are preset.

Lucy, are we talking about a wood canopy? Maybe I got confused and jumped the gun with my advice.

Your advice is appreciated.
I don't know what kind, the ad didn't say or show a pic of the canopy.
The ad just said
55g tank w/stand, canopy and glass lids. Doesn't leak.

I think canopy usually refers to the big wood thing on top. I don't know why they would advertise without a picture of it though....

Hmm definitely have a good look before handing over any money

Do you have a pic of the canopy?
Honestly, I doubt it'll still be available. I e-mailed the guy fri night asking if it was still available.
Since I didn't hear from back from him my husband spent a bunch of money at the fish store on me yesterday.

I check my e-mail this afternoon, sometime late last night the guy e-mails me and says first come first served.
He's asking 150. for it.

I looked at my husband and Ummm....Honeyyyyy........

Mine did not come with a canopy..Just the cheap plastic hood thing...But I'm very confused as to what exactly canopy means..lol...So I'm no help..If it's the glass type hoods, like Pink is talking about, My 120 has them and I love it..But if its the wood trim like piece that goes on top over the hood I don't have one..

As serssime said above, the canopy is a wooden top for the tank which you can house your lights and such in. Just make sure you have glass top for the tank. I have a plastic hood over my tank now,but have a canopy ordered for it. The canopy gives you more chooses as to what type of lights to use for the tank. If you can still get the tank go for it.
