| As long as no chemicals or abrasives have been used to clean it,the seals on an aquarium should last forever (someone let me know when they reach that length of time on theirs) . There' are meds and corrosives used in cleaning, like bleach and vinegar, that will weaken the silicone. The biggest factor in silicone erosion is generally UV rays from sunlight and even lighting, such as metal hylide lights. Salt water also weakens it over time,so come to think about it,maybe they don't last forever. There's a lot of factors to consider.
As far as resealing a damaged seal, new sealant will not adhere to old sealant, the old silicone has to be removed, the glass cleaned, dried, then you're ready to reseal. It's really not difficult.
Anyone who wants to get rid of their old aquariums because of a bad seal, send them my way I will gladly fix it up.
60$ is a decent price,I would grab it.The stand alone is worth over $100 get it,there's threads here already explaining how to reseal an aquarium if necessary, total cost about $3 and a day's time ( 1 hr removing old sealant 10 minutes drying the moisture,30 minutes applying new sealant 24 hr drying time for silicone to cure). Let us know and I or another member can point you in the right direction. Last edited by soldieroffortune1974; April 8th, 2009 at 02:57 PM.
